SUBJECT: # 231: need catfish bait recipes

Submitted by Joel (205.188.197.27) from KENTUCKY on 5/28/2000 12:08:00 PM

I like to bass fish my son like to fish for catfish at nite he is 14 we have tryed the baites you buy at wal-mart the fish we catch are small i would like some recipes to make my own bait so my son can catch a big cat thanks for the help

  1. 5/30/2000 11:38:00 AM Submitted by Big Sam Cat Man (205.145.58.36) from TEXAS says To catch a BIG'un
IF you want your son to catch a big cat you really need to use live bait. Get him some worms and have him catch some bream during the day, keep them alive in a big tub or igloo with an aerator. Then rig him up a carolina rig with a live bream on the hook. Big cats love live bait, plus he gets to have fun catch'in the bream. Good Luck and let us know if he gets a BIG one.
  2. 5/30/2000 5:20:00 PM Submitted by Sandy from MISSISSIPPI says Just buy some chicken liver at the grocery.
Caught 14 yesterday. All sizes love that bloody liver.
  3. 6/2/2000 11:04:00 PM Submitted by McCoy from TENNESSEE says Big Cats
We hardly ever catch the big ones here in warm weather, but for big blues in the wintertime, we use cut skipjack (river herring) fillets about the size of your hand on 8/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hooks. Any kind of chunk of fish will do, even a catfish fillet. For flatheads use live bait. A bluegill or something.
  4. 6/4/2000 8:18:00 PM Submitted by will (199.248.167.219) from TEXAS says bait
the others were right about live bait.we get a 5 gallon bucket with lid, fill one third with corn (chops or chicken feed)fill the rest about 3inches from the top with grain (maze, oats)then put 2 warm beers,1 pack of bakers yeast, and fill the rest with water.put the lid on and let it set for about 3 weeks outside in the sun.put a couple hand fulls in a panty hose or small mesh bag and sink it in the area you want to fish.next day go and throw a few handfuls in the same area a start fishing.use live bait, chicken livers or worms.good luck hope you catch a bigg'un.
  5. 6/6/2000 2:21:00 PM Submitted by Papa Bull from CONNECTICUT says Only shovelheads require live bait.
Blues and channels are more than happy to take cut bait. I like using cut carp. Nice, smelly and they have large fillets. Bluegill heads work good, too.

Shovelheads will occasionally take an offering other than live bait, but if you want to target shovelheads, you need to use live bait or you could wait a long, long time (years) to get a big flathead on your line.

Chicken livers are good for ALL sizes of channel cats and blue cats will take it, too. General preferences for me are:

Blue cats: Cut bait shovel heads: BIG live baits channel cats: chicken livers

  6. 6/7/2000 9:51:00 PM Submitted by Jv (208.235.31.197) from ILLINOIS says Shad, Shad, Shad
My experience calls for shad. I think it outperforms anything else in the rivers around here for a simple reason; it is the most prevalant forage of any of the three major species of catfish. It works good cut or live, but even cut shad must be FRESH. They seem to deteriorate real fast once they die, (and they die if you look at them wrong) and the difference in bites is noticeable.
  7. 6/11/2000 11:04:00 PM Submitted by Catfish Bob (206.103.101.84) from OKLAHOMA says chicken liver, mmm!!!
about the only bait i use for catfish is liver, and i ALWAYS, sprinkle some garlic on that big chunka' meat, just for that little bit more of a stink on it, so give it a try sometime, and good luck...
  8. 7/7/2000 3:10:00 PM Submitted by josh (216.77.126.89) from KENTUCKY says minnows
im 12 about the age of your son and I always use live minnows to catch that big catfish.good luck and let me know if it works.e-mail me at netsfleming@hotmail.com
  9. 8/23/2001 9:20:00 AM Submitted by B. cummings (208.238.117.19) from ALABAMA says cat baits
I haven't heard anyone mention anything about using live eels. that is my #1 bait of choice and always seems to work for the big cats. also shad does pretty good.

  10. 2/11/2002 5:10:00 PM Submitted by B.Cummings (129.123.250.96) from Benson says Blucats
I would like to tell you that Mudcats and little carp minnows work the best in the Bear River. I also use chunks of big carp on a 0/4 hook with 2 meduim size egg sinkers. Well have fun ahope you catch something

  11. 2/11/2002 7:08:00 PM Submitted by Kep (129.123.250.84) from UTAH says baits fo blues
I live in benson and I use live carp minnows and also dead ones. But live ones work the best unless the dead stink really bad. Hope you have fun fishing.

All you need is one pound/package of fresh raw shrimp, one bottle of the hottest hot sauce you can find, marinate shrimp in a desirable amount of hot sauce for 2 to 3 hrs. This can be frozen until next fishing trip.

  14. 2/18/2005 4:15:00 PM Submitted by kenny (24.196.160.242) from NORTH CAROLINA says nice size cat
I have found out that there is nothing better than liver. you can allso put chichin skin on the line so when you cast if the liver flies off you have something on the line. A cut up horny head will work great to. I have tried them all and this is what works in the french broad. Some one allso told me that chicken nuggets work to, but they could be full of it. good luck

  15. 7/22/2005 7:31:00 PM Submitted by Jeremy Young (63.145.38.70) from TEXAS says blood bait
I am looking for a good blood bait recipe. I need it to be really really thick stiff. I've tried doubling the recipe of sure-jell, but it won't even try to get stiff. If anyone has any suggestions or recipes of their own, please write me.
