SUBJECT: # 411: What is the best bait to use for trotlines?

Submitted by Oz (208.35.252.3) from TEXAS on 7/17/2001 5:46:00 PM

Hello,

I was just wondering if any of you could tell me what the best type of bait is to use on a trotline. Any input would be appreciated greatly.

  1. 7/18/2001 9:39:00 AM Submitted by Robster (129.107.9.85) from TEXAS says Bait for trotlines
If you have a place where you can get some crawdads they make fantastic trotline bait.

  2. 7/18/2001 10:22:00 AM Submitted by tn-pete (209.142.163.6) from TENNESSEE says RE: best bait to use for trotlines?
Here In Tennessee We use cut shad or skipjack in the spring and other times also. When the grass hopper's ( the yellow one's)Get big enough and turn hard, They are hard to beat Just cut them in half and they do better. Also crickets cheeze ball doballs and You can take the cut shad or skipjack and put it in a glass jar sit it in the sun for at least 6 hour's with a cloth covering the top and make sure that the bait is covered with water. And you can also take your cutbait and put nutmeg, red food color of vanilla. anyone of these will make cut bait better.

And as robster posted crayfish is good bait as long as the place your fishing dont have a lot of drum .

Also i can e-mail how to make these cheezeball and doball's

After baiting you trotline, try chumming around it with sour wheat or maize. Jess

  4. 7/20/2001 5:11:00 AM Submitted by Dog (63.70.130.16) from LOUISIANA says Small toads !
If you know a place where baby toads are abundant(when you see one there are usually a lot more near), the small toads are excellent bait , they are tougher skinned than most bait fish and have a lot of scent(poison used as a defense)catfish love . Do not use bigger toads as they have more poison , have you ever saw a dog pick up a toad and start foaming at the mouth this is why they have it , baby toads have this toxin too but is not too strong to make fish avoid eating them and actually draws fish in .

Cutbait made from shad , bream etc... does well or if small enough for your hooks whole live bream , shad are hard to keep alive but do fine dead . Large worms like Canadian nightcrawlers , clay worms or swamp worms as well as catapala worms do good but if there are any bream or other smaller fish near your bait will be gone in a hurry .

There are cheese and stinkbaits that are good except for it falls off easily so its a better chum . Also they make soap bait which does fine in the cooler times of the year .

It's best you experiment with several types of bait and find one that works where you fish , the all time best trotline bait is squid when it can be found , it's tough and will stay hooked even after catching fish on it ! Be sure to properly mark your trotline to help avoid it from becoming a "hook trap" for other fishermen , most people here will cut your lines loose if they get hung in it casting unless it's easily recognized .

    Good Fishin !

i know around here you cant use the panfish as bait. only the trash fish. every thing seems to be regulated around here.

  6. 7/21/2001 6:19:00 AM Submitted by Charles (63.10.163.32) from SOUTH CAROLINA says Fishing With Bream
It is legal to fish with bream in SC you have to catch them with hook and line and there is a limit of 30 SCDNR have the new rules and regs on there website. If you want to catch big catfish live bream or shad is the only way to go. big cats seem to love small bream

  7. 7/22/2001 8:52:00 PM Submitted by ncshp2b (205.244.127.53) from NORTH CAROLINA says trotline bait...........
Tobacco worms and tomato worms .........give them a try...

  8. 7/23/2001 8:46:00 PM Submitted by Dog from LOUISIANA says We can trap bream for bait on Toledo Bend
But it's the only place in La. it is legal but can use them as bait anywhere else if caught on a reel . Ever hear of using bass ? Well as long as it is legal size we can use it for bait ! I myself don't but have known people to do so , it's not a practice I would suggest to anyone even if legal in your State !

  9. 8/2/2001 8:49:00 PM Submitted by McCoy from TENNESSEE says Bait
Cut bait seems to be best if you have it. I have taken the ribs cut from catfish fillets and cut them up as used them as bait. They seem to work about as good as anything. Hot dogs cut into chunks works real well but doesn't stay on quite as good as cut bait.

  10. 8/3/2001 10:11:00 AM Submitted by CrmDog (63.49.136.23) from NORTH CAROLINA says ??? bait ???
In North Carolina Good Cat Fish'N can be done using Catawba Tree worms (cigar tree). Also for those who may be near Richmond Co. NC try the State Pond called Indian Camp. It is on U.S. Hwy. #1 a few miles from Rockinham Motor Speedway. 5lb'rs caught daily !!!!!!!

  11. 8/11/2001 3:15:00 PM Submitted by Don (209.240.220.188) from NORTH CAROLINA says Indian Camp
Hey CrmDog how about some more info on the pond. I camp out at The Rock twice a year for 4 days each to watch The Boys turn left. Come from New Bern way. A day catching a few of those 5 pounders so I could fry up a fresh catfish supper would be great. E-mail me if you want. kelloggs5fan@webtv.net

beef heart because it bleeds when it is hanging on your line.the only retail store i've found it at is food lion, you cut it up into little small chunks the size of your thumbnail and leave it on you line untill it rots or falls off.

  13. 10/21/2002 10:27:00 PM Submitted by mac (63.87.216.145) from TEXAS says the best bait i've used yet
i think beef livers are the best thier better then chicken livers because they stay on the hook longer

  14. 3/24/2007 9:37:00 PM Submitted by billy bechtel (76.107.27.72) from LOUISIANA says whats the best
the best bait here in louisiana is a mixture on craw daddys, night crawlers, and some grass hoppes... you will tie 3 hooks and put each kind on each hook.
