SUBJECT: # 622: Hate to waste, so here's the question.

Submitted by MrDo from TEXAS on 7/25/04 2:41:00 PM

Has anyone ever used cooked crawfish for catfish? Trotline or rod and reel? They certainly have scent with the crab boil, but will the spiciness be too much for the fish?

It actually sounds pretty crazy, but I have heard of crazier things being used on catfish ie; strips of aluminum cans on a hook.

I would appreciate any and all input.

PS This is not a troll, I have about 9lbs left after a party and my taste buds are crawfished out.

But then some overweight duck hunter would most likely rob your bait and chow down on it. Even so!

You might want to get in touch with that Harbor dude. He seems to have a trick for everything that bites, even crabs!

heck, catfish will eat pretty much anything. I don't think the spiciness registers on their taste budsso it shouldn't be a problem. They eat Ivory soap don't they? Crab boil shouldn't make a difference.

My thought would be to bait a hole with that. Place all those mudbugs in a heavy burlap bag and weight it down. Set it in a hole that you will want to fish in a day or two and let the cats come to the feast. They will be all over that bag of 'dads. Come in with some fresh cut bait like shad or herring and you should be able to slay them. If you like cats that is. That will bring up a lot of channel cats and they can be pretty good fighters and eaters.

I've done it with dog food and it works. The worst I've ever heard of is one of our truck drivers. He'll take a roadkill and string it up over a honey hole in the creek near him. As the animal rots and the maggots fall out of the thing and into the water, catfish gather to chow down on the maggots. Just thinking of that makes me retch.

I know this for sure, the gulls tear em up. The spice doesn't seem to bother them at all. Do gulls have tongues? Ha!

As Lucy stated above, it would create a nice slick. I'm going to go ahead and freeze em and try it out the next time I'm out for the weekend.

We used to have a wire mesh cage just above the water in a little slew on Toledo Bend when I was a kid. We would take the fish guts and heads and thrown them in there to rot. You could always count on plenty of fish around that thing. Fish like maggots. Yek!
