Lake Okeechobe during the Summer

Walt Reynolds Fishing

Lake Okeechobee is not really thought of as a summertime lake, but it has some really good fishing both early and late each day. The tropical sun here in south Florida does have a way of running you back to the comfort of the air conditioner about 10:00 am each morning. But be sure to head back out about 4:00 PM as the heat starts to fade and the fish start to get active.

If you enjoy topwater fishing and Carolina rigging, then you will have some great fishing during the summer months. An added plus is this is the off season and besides local rates being cheaper, there is not nearly the traffic on the lake that you have to contend with in the winter season. It is far easier to get reservations and guides this time of year so it takes a lot less planning to make a trip down.

The lake level this summer is quite low so you want to use caution in running across the lake. There are rocks that stretch across the lake from near Clewiston to Belle Glade. These same rockpiles that can be a navigation hazard also produce some outstanding fishing opportunities this time of year. As with most lakes the fish move from the shallow grass to deeper offshore areas in the summer and they really pile up in the open water.

We are entering the rainy season here now so keep an eye skyward for the afternoon thunderstorms that pop up almost every day. They can produce some lighting that will send you for shore as well as heavy rain showers that usually don't last too long. Also don't forget your sunscreen as the sun can give you a bad burn very quickly this time of year.
