Subject: Kakagi, Canada

Date Fished: 6/29/2012
Water Temperature: 65
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

My brother Wyatt and I took out annual fishing trip to Lake Kakagi, Northern Onteriao, Canada. It is about 100 miles north of International Falls, MN. We got there Sun 17 Jun in the early afternoon and fished through the next Sunday. The weather ranged from cool 40s in the AM and 60s in the PM, two days were warm with temps in the 70s and 80s. We had some real bad thunder storms and one day of bad wind. The bass were coming off the bed and most of the muskies were gone out of the shallows. We mostly fish a Zoom centipede on 8lb Stren line, 2/0 Gamagatsu straight shank hook with a 3/16oz bullet weight. The smallmouth really like this setup and so do the muskie and northern pike. Although with the toothy critters sometimes it hard to get a hookset that gets the hook in the corner of their mouths. If you don't their teeth will just cut the line on the hookset. Most of the fish we catch we see before hand. There is an excitement went a three to four foot long muskie charges your centipede and enhales it. The water is very clear with things in the 10-15 foot range visiable. There are only a few areas in each section of the lake that holds the bottom composition that groups up the fish. After eight years I know lots of these areas. Now the lake is five miles wide and 25 miles long so there are still lots of more places I have not found. Case in point is a shallow bay on an island close to the camp. We stumbled on it the last day and got fifteen smallmouth out of it, with 5 in a row over three pounds. We only saw six muskie all week. I caught a 31 incher and a 37 incher the same afternoon. Wyatt saw a very big fish cruising a shallow bay and cast to it. The fish saw the centipede hit the water and charged it and hit. The fish missed and Wyatt set the hook, balling the centipede up on the hook, as he was reeling it back to the boat this monster chased it down and took it about ten feet from the boat. The hook was set in the right place (corner of the mouth) and the fight was on. I have caught four footers and this fish was bigger 50-55 inches (38-40lbs). It fought in the center of the cove for quite a while before making a power run to a log next to the bank. Trying to turn it did not work, it hit that tree and kept on going. Wyatt was not good company for quite a while. We found more northern pike back in a shallow bay in one week patch. There must have been 30 of them there. This lake does not give up many northerns. Ther took two swimbaits away before I caught a 28 incher. We caught many there in the 24 to 31 inch range, but I bet we lost 20 centipedes there. We found two five pound smallmouths and probably caught those two fish three times each, they are not very smart (I like fishing for dumb fish). In the seven days of fishing Wyatt and I caught 432 smallmouth up to five pounds, 1 large mouth, 32 northern pike up to 9 pounds, 2 muskie one 11lb and one 18 lbs, 6 rockbass and a yellow perch. It was 2661 miles round trip. I would post photos but do not know how.

Even a diehard bass fisherman can understand muskie fever when a big one gets away. Sympathies to your bro. It'll haunt him all the days.

Ever hear of wire leaders? It's ashamed all those fish are swimming around with hooks stuck in their mouths and most likely to die.
