Subject: Stick Marsh/Farm 13, Florida

Submitted by Skipjack (ip 206.103.134.92)

Date Fished: 9/28/2000
Water Temperature: na
Water Clarity: 0

Checked the weather report for the Melborne area that looked promising, and got up with friend Richard H. for an overnight trip to "The Stick" . We left here about 11:30, Motel "6" reservations made and Bass Cat in tow. Launched our boat about 3:30 PM, with some clouds and a brisk wind. Ran into Hugh Crumpler fishing the canal on the way out, but there was only 4 or 5 trucks at the ramp. Hugh suggested looking for schoolers. With a stong east wind, we fished the north west end of Stick, thinking it might have the bait fish in that corner. Big Mistake! No bites and we did quite a bit of log/stump bumping slowly makeing our way out. We then worked our way accross the Stick flat towards the center canal, into the canal and around the end of the berm. Not one hit. Around 6:15, I suggested we move out into Farm 13, and fish some hydrilla. (plenty to choose from.) Just before I stoped we saw and active school and I had a nice one on with my first cast. In a short time I had 3 in the boat and lost a couple of more, using a Bomber tiger Chartuse, small lip diver. Richard changed baits a couple of times trying to match my bait, and still did not have a bite, so when my reel fouled up, I gave him my Bomber while I got out anther rod. He then put three or 4 in the boat during the time I was getting out a new duplicate and back in the water. In a short time we caught 10 bass, and lost 4 or 5 before they got to the boat. There were 3 different schools in sight from where we were fishing. We quit about 6:45 and went back into Palm Bay for supper and a good night's sleep. Over night, a lot of rain fell just to the north of our motel. A lot, like 9", by morning in one spot. The front was stuck over mid Florida, and we were on the southern edge. After breakfast, we were launching our boat a little after 7 AM, and it didn't look too bad. It was cloudy, and the wind was up, but it did not look like rain. I headed for the spot where we left them biting, but we could not raise a bite. We traded off on different baits to no avail. In addition, my trolling motor was giving me a hard time controlling the boat. I thought it was the wind, but by 9 AM it quit, and I had no control of direction. The Motor was loose on the shaft and the foot petal would not turn it. We tried a couple of other spots using the anchor and tying off to a piling. Richard finally caught a 2/3 LBer. (same Bomber bait.) The wind was like 30 knots, water rough and rain started, so we packed it in and left about 10:30. Not a good day on the Stick/13 and the trolling motor problem was the icing on the fallen cake. The Trolling Motor (Guide) was new, with about 10 hours on it. BPS is sending me a replacement, as I am going up to Clark hill for a month of fishing and they considered my plite. They did agree to let me return it for another brand if this one screws up and I think it will. It was a model EF-60V and I thought the construction was more like a Tinker Toy. So after a disappointing trip to Stick marsh/Farm 13, some lousy weather and high wind, I hope I will have better luck on the big Clakr Hill Lake just west of Augusta GA. My friends there said "the fish are biting" and the "water is low!!" I'll have to watch out for my prop. Skipjack
