Date Fished: 9/26/2000
Water Temperature: 87
Water Clarity: 1 foot

I waited to post this fishing report in hopes that a few of the people that fish these waters would step up and relate their experiences out here. I know that I speak for a lot of people when I ask that some of you guys that come out to the Marsh let us know what you find that is or isn't working, the areas that you fished, the baits that you tried and a general overview of how your day went. Let's share what you have learned so that others can have a good time on the Marsh! We have basically only three people reporting on the Marsh - Hugh Crumpler, Jim Porter, and myself: of course we generally do well out there. Hugh and I fish full time for a living out there and Jim gets out most afternoons. We post our reports and hope that you have a good time and a good catch with some of the information that we pass along. I would really appreciate some feedback. The fishing on the Marsh using artificial bait is still good. For us that fish the Marsh on a regular basis, the numbers spoil us and we are always looking for that 70-100 fish day, but the fact is a 30+ day catch is actually quite good in any fisherman's language. The last three weeks have found us moving around a little bit more than usual to find those bass receptive to our baits. Different baits in different areas are the order of the day, however a word of caution about how much you move around is needed. I have seen a tremendous amount of excessive running around out there. When the fishing tightens up you need to slow down and fish areas more thoroughly rather than run around and fish more area. The bass are still busting on the shad and anyone paying attention to this detail and then get themselves into the area of play have had a good payout. Soft jerk baits, rattle traps, spoons are just some of the baits that will produce when thrown into the midst of the bust. Another word of caution on this one is: don't fall into the trap of trying to chase these busts around as you will spend all day trying to catch up. If you see this kind of activity keep working your way about in the area until the bust occurs next to you. Texas rigs have been producing bass from the edges of hydrilla along the old irrigation canals. Only use enough weight to get your bait down and be ready for a hit on the fall. Most hits will be fast with the bait being rejected quickly so be ready for that hookset. Big bass fishing is happening in the southern ends of the Marsh. Many areas are more than open enough to get in there. This area of the Marsh has everything these big guys need and although it takes a bit more work to fish this area it can be worth the entire day to get back there. Now's the time to test some of those baits you never pull out. Fish slow and fish thorough. Work the irrigation canal edges, the south end and the scattered hydrilla areas out in the middle of nowhere. On the Stick Marsh you will also find bass holding in areas of brush. Texas rigs have been working out there. To those that walk up and say hi, I really appreciate it. Have a great day out there, stop by and say hi, and catch a biggun.
