SUBJECT: # 4328: Bow Strap

Submitted by Donnie J. Phillips (70.247.135.15) from TEXAS on 5/12/2008 11:13:00 PM

Good ole fishing buddy of mine and I went to a newly filled reservoir called O.H. Ivie. Backed down the ramp, undid both transom straps, backed on into the water beside a very short dock with an older gentleman standing on it. My buddy climbed over the bow and sat down and motioned for me to come backwards, and of course, I ASSumed he had unlatched the bow strap. He gave her the gas to launch, not so - motioned for me to come further back, gave her more gas - wouldn't move. Then, rather concerned he asked the gentleman patiently watching this if the bow strap was still hooked up. His reply " Yes it is, but I think you can break it if you give it another try." My buddy died of cancer this year and I miss him dearly.

Good ole fishing buddy of mine and I were fishing a bass tournament on Lake Amistad, we had opted to launch our boat at the High Bridge on the Pecos River. This was in late September when it is light enough to see at about 7:30am, fishing time started at 6:00am. We anxiously awaited till 6am and started chunking worms at what we thought was the bank, not an ideal situation when you can't see a foot in front of your face, and after about thirty minutes of this futility I heard a distinct thud. Didn't know what it was, just thought he had hit the bank with a longshot. About ten minutes later he queried " Do you have a flashlight?" but of course I did. "Would you mind seeing if I am bleeding?" He had hung his worm on a stickup and had pulled it taught enough that when it came free it was almost a perfect shot right between the eyes and just below the bill of his cap, and yes he was bleeding. God bless and fish safe.

Good ole fishing buddy of mine and I went to Amistad just to do some recreation fishing, and the trip there, one way, was only 360 miles. So you can imagine the good fishing stories we shared along the way. Never could beat him on the stories anyhow! Excitement was high as we got to the ramp, launched the boat at Diablo East (which is a very steep and very very long walk up the hill to the parking lot) and when he got back to the boat and put his life jacket on, I idled out to the "No Wake Bouy" and then gunned that 225HorsePower Mercury only to see the big motor almost go under! At that time my good ole fishing buddy was over 50 but he did sprint up the ramp and get back down before my boat sunk because of stupidity (forgot to put my plug in). That was the exact time that I vowed never to take that particular plug out again! Only thing was, I forgot to tell my buddy about that vow. Had a good day on the lake anyway. Next day as he was backing me into the water, he leaned out and asked if the plug was in - gave him the big thumbs up and the routine was duplicated from the day before. As he ran up the hill to get the pickup, it was then that I realized he had watched me pull that plug whenever we loaded the boat on the trailer, he had pulled it when we loaded the night before. Can't fix stupid, but we did improve on it!

Anyone who has fished with a boat any length of time has been at the ramp and forget to put the plug in only to have the boat fill up with water. I solved that problem about 5 years ago by putting a 1500 gallon per hour automatic bilge pump in my boat. Now I never have to take the plug out except when maybe when I get in a heavy rain storm on the way home and I only pull it then so the water runs out before I get home and back into the garage. Did that once and as soon as the boat was level enough for the water to activate that automatic pump, there was water all over the garage. I still forgot to put the plug in once since installing the Automatic Pump but as soon as the back of the boat was in the water and before I unhooked the front strap, water started pumping out of the bilge. I just had my partner pull me back out of the water and quickly reinstalled the plug. Water was still pumping out when I was backed back into the water again but was finished just a short time later. Beside putting Hydraulic steering in, it's the best improvement I've made on my old Ranger

yeah, those automatics are a pretty good insurance policy! I was fishing Lake Fork with my son and a friend, and the rain showers kept rolling in. Finally got so heavy we tied up at a small dock and got under some trees for relief. After about 10 minutes, twin arcs shot out from the stern of the ZX225 as the pumps got rid of the rainwater in the bilge. This went thru 2-3 cycles and was highly intertaining and confidence building.

Several years ago about 4 or 5 of us went on a weekend camping / fishing trip taking our wife’s . It had started to rain very hard and lightening strikes so we beached our boats and hid under a shelter. A short time passes and my one buddy says to the other “ Hey your boat is pissing into mine!” Old boy looks at him and says “ Guess you better get an automatic bilge pump.”

Was pretty funny at the time.
