SUBJECT: # 1748: Hair Raising Story

Submitted by bigriverboy (206.222.96.195) from TEXAS on 3/13/2000 7:19:00 PM

Last spring I took my kayak out on the Llano River for a weekend of paddling and fly-fishing. I wanted to cover about 20 miles of water, so I spread it out over two days. Packed all my camping gear and enough provisions in the storage hatches of the kayak. The portion of the river I picked was very beautiful, and never seen by most paddlers. It was a secluded portion that does not have access between the portage points. No highways, no houses...nothing but ranch land the entire trip. So... once I put in, I knew I would have to make it to the end to get out again (or traverse the desolate ranch land for help, if needed). The fishing was very slow the first day, only a few small bass. So, I ended trying to make good time with some serious paddling. By the end of the day I was pretty exhausted and pitched my tent on some large boulders, overlooking a set a falls. I think I was asleep by 7:00pm.

The next morning I was up and had the kayak packed just after sunrise. Due to making such good time the day before, I was in no hurry and began to fish hard and really enjoy the beautiful scenery. Within the first 15 minutes I came to a low-water crossing. "Nothing to alarm me here", I said to myself. I have paddled for years and low-water crossing were old-hat for me now. However, this is where the story takes a much different turn. Seeing that the water level was just above the tubes, it appeared very calm and tranquil. I could faintly hear the water coming out the other side, but there seemed no reason for concern. So, I very innocently I bring my kayak along side the crossing...parallel, butt-up against it. Very bad decision...(my whole life I have always paddled to bank of river, never right up against the darn crossing! What was i thinking!!!) Well, as the side of the kayak touched the cement edge of the crossing, it rocked sideways just a bit. Then before I realized it I had been tumped out and was treading water. In less than a second the kayak turned 90 degrees, pointed itself directly at the crossing and fed itself into one of the chutes...and hung there, half-in, half-out...Before I could react, I was doing the exact same thing. The current very quickly began to suck at my feet and pull me into the very next chute. Without hesitation, I grabbed the top of the road and held on for dear life. I was helpless. The lower half of my body was being sucked down a 10 foot tube at who knows how many cfm. Out of sheer adrenaline, was able to hold on to road, find some gravel with my feet and push legs back out..and make it to safety. I can only imagine how easily I could have broken my neck, or got hung on a piece of re-bar in the chute. Well, after about 2-3 minutes of pulling myself together, I realized my kayak was still half-way lodged into the opening of this chute. Now I know why the Perception Prism has a wide 13" beam....Anyway, I pulled and tug on the kayak with no success. It just wouldn't budge. I wasn't sure what to do so I merely looked around for help. Now, remind you..this is the hill country...ranch land...nothing but goats and cattle....Most ranches out here are several hundred acres large, so the population is pretty sparce. And this was just one of many low-water crossings on some old rancher's land... But, by the gift of God, a rancher and his son came driving up in an old pick-up. They get a good chuckle, but give me a hand and help me pull the kayak out. Not hardly a scratch on the sturdy little boat. I didn't dare mention my own test of fate, but thanked them kindly and we both went our ways.

I finished the trip by noon that day, but still didn't catch much more fish. But I did learn about the dangers of low-water crossings and the power of water. I am not sure what God has planned for me in this life, but he sure keeps a good eye on me. Did I also tell you this was Easter Sunday!!!!

Whenever approaching a bridge, low-water crossing, or dam, make sure to head straight for bank to get out. Never attempt to be so clever and think you can just hop out onto the road. I nearly paid for that mistake with my life!

  1. 3/14/2000 11:21:00 AM Pb (208.24.128.4) from TEXAS says A friend of mine died that way.
Thought he could make it through the low water crossing. A pretty popular spot called Mary's crossing on the Guadalupe.
  2. 3/14/2000 1:18:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says Boats & Sundays
Maybe God was telling you that you should have been in Church on Sunday. Especially on Easter Sunday. A boat is a good thing to have, but it belongs in the driveway on Sundays.
  3. 3/14/2000 1:58:00 PM BassTaurus from MISSOURI says Rjy!?
You kidding us! What better way to thank the Lord than to be out enjoying his creation? How long do you (or can you)stay in church anyway? Going to church should not be a punishment!
  4. 3/14/2000 2:05:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says Enjoy!
There are six other days in the week. Enjoy every moment of every day. Going to Church is not a punishment if you love the Creator. And if you can be there for service and get some fish time, so much the better! I'm close enough to the water that I can do both. But I'm not on the water when I should be in God's house.
  5. 3/14/2000 2:31:00 PM Scott B (206.32.152.194) from MASSACHUSETTS says Reply for Rjy
Rjy, Most of us don't have the luxury of fishing the other 6 days a week. The only time we have is either Saturday or Sunday. I have absolutely nothing against church, or folks that go every Sunday, but I make monthly payments on my boat for a good reason. That reason happens to need more than 1 day a week on the water.
  6. 3/14/2000 2:44:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says Good Answer
I'm sure the Man upstairs will be impressed with that reply. "Look God, do you have any idea of how much I paid for that boat! And look at these storage cost. Have you priced fish at the store lately! And what about...."
  7. 3/14/2000 4:29:00 PM reelmadnezz (209.86.13.38) from FLORIDA says i think maybe,
God would understand if you were to say something like, thanks for the day you've given me, and all the things in nature that you've made for my enjoyment and your glory. i always felt that i was closer to God on the water or in the woods than i ever did in a man made church. just my .02
  8. 3/14/2000 4:34:00 PM Phill (136.200.212.33) from CALIFORNIA says Rjy...
You triggered a raw nerve bud. Do you really have to impose "your" morals and use the fire and brimstone, guilt crap to control others? Does it make you feel better? Are you more qualified to enter heaven, because YOU go to church on Sunday? Got more bonus points with "god" now since you've chastised and set someone "straight"?

You should keep your garbage "rules" and holier-than-thou attitudes to yourself. Your type is responsible for the Christian Crusades, the Inquisition, the stock and locks, and the Ayllatolah Khomeni....whatever the spelling is. You need to stay in your own version of your "house of god" all 7 days of the week, keep your condesceding sermons to yourself and this world would be a lot more peaceful and compatible. It's guys like you that cause alot of bloodshed and give the name of God a bad rap. Self-righteous bozo!

Do you also condemn your grocery store clerk, the paramedic, or cop for working on a Sunday? That just shows the absurdity of your stupid "morals".

  9. 3/14/2000 5:05:00 PM God (12.18.36.220) from CONNECTICUT says down boys
BassTaurus, Reelmadnezz, Scott B & Phil. Let your conscious be your guide, It is my country and I will not condemn you for enjoying it. C & R to all!!
  10. 3/14/2000 5:32:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says Glad, Sad or Mad
Whenever the name of God or Jesus is brought up, you are gonna get one of these ways.

To realmadnezz: There is certainly no problem in what you say. But remember that believers (if you are or claim to be) should not forsake the gathering together of God’s people. Maybe you need to find a God made Church and feel just as close there as you do in the wilderness. Try it and let me know I’m wrong.

And to Phil: First, I refuse to get into the mud at the level you would like to take this. If you are feeling “guilt crap”, don’t blame it on me, Bud. That is your problem. Not mine. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. No, I am not “more qualified”. However, I know the way to get my ticket punched. Do you? The problem is that too many Christians are too quiet. And have been too quiet for way too long. All of the atrocities you accuse “my type” of show me that you don’t have a clue as to what my type is. I think these were more of your type. You see, my friend, those who truly believe in the teachings of Jesus would not do those things. I can’t stay in my version of the “house of God”. You see, I have been bought with the price of the blood of Jesus Christ and have not been able to be quiet for over twenty years. Another sign that one is a true believer. I will pray that God in his grace will remove the scales from your eyes one day that you might be able to see clearly. And don’t worrie yourself about outspoken Christains like me. Better that you fear He who is able to destroy both body and soul. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. How smart are you?

  11. 3/14/2000 6:45:00 PM Ispot (152.163.213.83) from INDIANA says Does this mean church on Saturday is out?
I have a friend that goes to church on Saturday. Is he doing something wrong? You do not have to go to church to love God. You and your religous choices are between you and your God. If it is my God, then he will understand any way, shape or form that I choose to give to Him. He understands all, and in the end, He will be the one to judge us. WWJD?
  12. 3/14/2000 7:48:00 PM Darryl (205.188.197.154) from WISCONSIN says church
My father told me that church is where you make it.going to church on sunday in your sunday best and saying"peace be with you" is foolish when your a sinner six other days a week. church,I'm sorry to say has become more of a place to show your new clothes off then to praise the lord.I know deep down that most people agree theres a little too much passing of the money plate.I for one would have to say with a $37,000 bass boat I will be taking my fathers advice and agree that church is where you make it ,and its definitly its in your heart thats my imput see you on the water on sundays
  13. 3/14/2000 10:00:00 PM Rjy (12.28.68.121) from TEXAS says Thanks!
Thanks for showing me the error of my ways. I will convert to paganism at my earliest opportunity! Blessed are those who are persecuted for My namesake.
  14. 3/14/2000 10:11:00 PM CharlieK from TEXAS says Sunday,,,,Rjy, is this OK?
I was chairman of our missions comittee at our Church. Three years ago this month our minister and I needed to get away for some quality time to discuss and plan our various missions. After Church, with the full knowledge of our congregation, we left for a private lake on one of our member's property. The bass were fanning their nests and got very agressive when we tossed chuggers at them. We fished until after dark all the time discussing church matters. We both agreed that it was the most productive meeting we had ever had. Also, a really successful fishing trip.

Now, Rjy, you have me wondering whether we sinned. Called our minister and he feels that you are wrong. What say yee???

  15. 3/15/2000 9:02:00 AM Rabid ZaraPuppy (166.102.173.4) from OHIO says Rjy, your on-line street preacher
Sorry guys, unless you practice Rjy's brand of christianity, you're going to hell (sound like a pharasy (sp?) to you?)

Do whatever makes you feel closest to God. IMO, trying to live a christ-like existance is a million times more important than participating in a congregation. (BTW, I have served mass for 8 years)

  16. 3/15/2000 10:28:00 AM Scott B (206.32.152.194) from MASSACHUSETTS says Fishing & Religion
Lets face it, not everyone is as dedicated to church as Rjy. I have nothing against Rjy for choosing to leave the boat in the driveway on Sundays. That is his business. But just because we fish on Sundays doesn't mean we are bound for hell. Isn't there a commandment that says "Thou shall not let expensive boat collect dust on weekends?" Set that hook hard......
  17. 3/15/2000 10:48:00 AM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says I Repent!
Please forgive me for offending the great and might “Fish god”. I know I have trespassed on the sacred waters of fishdome. I have repented and tithed to my local marina my ten percent. I have eaten chum for communion with my fish brothers in five feet of murky water. I have anointed my bass boat with holy water. I have called all of my church brethren and told them I will not be there on Sunday mornings any more. I must participate in the Sunday T’s as my new form of worship! Oh wise men of the sea, can you find it in your hearts to ever forgive me? Now I can gain entry into Heaven because I now fish on Sunday!

This is just as silly as the above post. Fishing is not going to send you to Hell or Heaven. It’s obvious that most of you have spent very little time with the word of God.

  18. 3/15/2000 11:53:00 AM Scott B (206.32.152.194) from MASSACHUSETTS says Rjy...I agree
Rjy....I agree, most of us have (CHOSEN) not to spend our time with the word of God. But that is our business. You're right about the last post being silly. You seem like an intelligent person, and hopefully you figured out that my last post was meant to lighten things up a bit with a little humor. If you choose to stay off the water on Sundays, good for you. But trying to stuff YOUR opinion of God down others throats, just isn't going to get you a very favorable response. You do what you need to do on Sunday....and don't criticize others for their choices of what they like to do on Sunday. I'd bet the farm that 95% of the folks that visit this board fish on Sunday...no harm done.
  19. 3/15/2000 12:55:00 PM Phill (136.200.212.33) from CALIFORNIA says I disagree Scott...the guy is NOT intelligent
Sorry, but anyone who offensively judges, condemns, calls others who don't agree with him unsmart and has "scales" over their eyes, puts themselves at a higher plane than others, and uses "god" to threaten, is not "intelligent" by any standards. He's just a pompous, self righteous, narrow minded, controlling idiot. I'm just glad he's not in the seat of government, or we'd all be in the dungeon or grave, for violating his rules.

I'm glad today in America we can just ignore people like that, but from my world history classes, guys like RJ would have dominated your life. This Sunday fishing business would just be the tip of the iceberg. I don't even want to think what other "laws" he has.

  20. 3/15/2000 1:29:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says Great Scott!
Isn’t that what they used to say on the Superman TV show? “Great Scott, man! You can’t be serious”. I think Scott is the smart one. Got us all figured out. Anybody see the veins on Phil’s neck standing out? He’s so mad he could spit nails. Gut-hooked him good, didn’t I? He’s like a shark in a feeding frenzy. Kill the Christians! Throw them to the lions! I mean to the sharks! Probably a descendant of Nero. Oh well. For all of you who have your reel in a backlash, I say fish every day of the week if that’s what floats your boat. Just render to Caesar what is Caesars and to God that which is God’s. Got a problem with the rules? I didn’t make them. Take that up with the Man upstairs. Don’t know what the rules are? Sorry. That’s not an excuse. Try that next time you are in traffic court with the judge. God wont take “But I didn’t know” as an answer either. Don’t like what I say? Change the channel. Stop reading this post and tell your boss you are going fishing. I am sure he will not mind you not being there, will he?
  21. 3/15/2000 2:49:00 PM me (208.192.124.50) from ARIZONA says RJY and his higher conciousness
what makes you think your god is the only one? do you have material proof of this, or should we just take your word on it. Why is a person less of a person and condemned to hell because he chooses to worship differently?

Don't give me the party line for the crusader campaign. This world is made of many different peoples who worship their own way and what gives you the right to judge others? I sense hypocrisy in your words that you are so quick to admit that you fish/recreate on the day that you supposedly dedicate to worshipping your god. Then you use all these flowery quotes to continue making yourself feel good about this. Feeling pretty high and mighty aren't we?

  22. 3/15/2000 3:13:00 PM Whackmaster (208.12.166.12) from TEXAS says Boat Ramp?
Wasn't there a "boatramp" or low water crossing story somewhere around here? RJY, unless your church is located next to, near, or within sight of a boat ramp, I fail to see the relevance of any of your posts in this forum. Hell, I fail to see the relevance regardless. I must have scales on my eyes or something, eh?

Bigriverboy-great story. Makes you stop and think. I've seen several deaths on the Guadalupe from just the type of situation you describe. As a sometime kayaker, I'll keep this in the back of my mind.

  23. 3/15/2000 3:18:00 PM Rabid ZaraPuppy (166.102.173.4) from OHIO says Sorry Rjy!
Didn't mean to jump on your case, but your telling that guy that his near death experience was some kind of Devine punishment really struck a nerve. Reminded me of the mean old nuns telling us that if we missed our evening prayers, we may never wake up. I do believe that if you go to church as some drudgerous obligation and not to celebrate your faith, you're probably not doing yourself or the Big Guy any good.

    Peace

  24. 3/15/2000 3:52:00 PM Lanier Spot Chaser from GEORGIA says Time out!
    1. What does 9/10ths of this thread have to do with boat ramps or kayaks? Glad bigriverboy didnt get hurt.

    2. RJY- It almost sounds like you wish he would have gotten sucked through (maybe he would have learned then.....no good heathen fishin' on Easter Sunday!). You started all this with your opinion ("Boats are a good thing to have, but they belong in the driveway on Sundays"). Im glad you have an opinion- and you are entitled to that opinion, but looking at the other posts here its not a widely held view. Why are you surprised to find people that have different opinions, and who will defend their ideas as you are? Would God approve of your methods of religious conversion(insults, sarcasm, etc)? This is America. For better or for worse everyone is allowed to have differing opinions. Who are you to judge?

    (religious beliefs withheld)

off of this board to post 5202 Burger King Religion. And thanks for reading my mind, but no I wish no one harm. The original post hit me hard too. My daughter was almost killed on Halloween. If I had been in Church, it would not have happened. I still have nighmares over that one.

  27. 3/15/2000 11:00:00 PM Vanewbee (24.4.252.178) from VIRGINIA says Go to put my 2c into this one!
Im both a fisherman and lover of Jesus, Jesus is my lord and savior. With all the above post going all over the place just let me say if you have any questions just read the Bible, its all written there, but to say you time the ONLY way to get into heaven is through Jesus Christ. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus then you will go to heaven. So it is written.. So if you fish or dont fish on sunday that doesnt matter but that you have a personal relation ship with Jesus does.
  28. 3/16/2000 12:34:00 AM roaddog (208.191.24.80) from ARKANSAS says Well spoken vanewbee

  31. 3/16/2000 3:49:00 PM Ptl (136.200.212.33) from TEXAS says Rjy, what religion are you?
I'm embarassed that you're from my own state, claim to be god-loving and quote scripture from the bible. Your judgemental and sarcastic comments do not reflect a true Christ-like behavior. I could imagine God shaking his head and cringing at your attempts to represent him. Are you a new believer? It seems you may have some maturing to do. I will pray for you.

I think I recognize Rjy as a Baptist from my neighborhood. He is a good and honest man. I will never understand how he and others who share his beliefs can openly judge and condemn about 1 billion other good and honest people to hell. Their only crime is to not be Baptist. Those condemned to hell include ALL Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Hindis, Buddists, and countless other faiths and denominations.

    Shame! Shame!

HI GENTS, I HARDLY EVER POST OR RESPOND ON THIS BOARD BUT THIS TIME I'M GOING TO. OUR REALTIONSHIP WITH OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR IS A PERSONAL ONE NO DOUBT. I LOVE TO FISH MORE THAN I LIKE TO EAT AND I WEIGH 280PDS!! Sunday was set aside as a day of worship how we worship is also a personal issue, however if we're where we're suppose to be in our relationship with Christ I think we as Christians feel the need to be in church I have no problem with fishing on Sundays I do it all the time. But I make sure my family has heard the word of God first. I'd like to share a personal Expierence with you now if I may. Two years ago I was fishing a tournament trail all on Sunday's this particular Sunday I was fishing my local lake, just so happens I was on fish where I could lokk directly at the church I was brought up in. Anyway, I caught fish like mad my best 5 fish that day weighed over 20pds. all smallies at that. the problem was I heard the church bell ringing, I saw my own parents walk in the church doors, and there I set catching the best 5 fish limit of my life with the best payday I've ever had in my life feeling lower than a snake's belly. I've never fished a Sunday tourney since, I'm not judging and I'm sure not saying I'm better than you. But for me I'll put God first and the fish second. Dave

Now he'll probably take up golf and move down here!
  40. 3/20/2000 7:19:00 PM Phill (136.200.212.33) from CALIFORNIA says question for Cranker
I fail to see why you had such guilt over catching the fish on Sunday. Who created those fish? God or the devil? Who let you catch those fish? You really think you are that good of a fisherman? You sound like Sunday tournaments are part of a devilish ritual. Could it be God let you catch those fish, on a Sunday? I have no problems with anyone wanting to go to church, on any day of the week for that matter. Isn't this all god's creation we live in? Supposedly, god has control over the devil even, anything that happens was because god allowed it and planned it. I think you've been duped by the likes of the Rjy types...who want you to believe your entry into heaven is by what outward things you do, how you dress, how you walk, tithe, have sex, it goes on.... you know the drift. Not trying to knock your conviction, just curious about the basis of your conviction.

I think the bible thumpers take the bible way too literally. The bible was written by MAN, as documentaries of MAN's recollections. Inspired by god, maybe, but not written by god. Just look at the new testament books, they were written by several apostles 40 some years after the death of Christ. Each version varied. Would you want someone quoting you 40 years afeter you've died? I don't believe god intends to ban man from fishing on a Sunday. Same goes for what one eats, "as long as one gives thanks and acknowledges the one who gave him "this" day".

To each his own, Just don't impose your personal "rules for living" on me. I think Rjy might be a minister, or was influenced by one, who's income and subsistence is dependent on parishoners' tithes.

Phil, i know who made the fish, i know who made the moon, earth stars and the whole creation. the reason i go to church on sunday mornings and evenings is i draw strength spiritually from being there. i know alot go for the show ultimatly there will no doubt be people in hell who were at church everytime the door was opened. but there will also be people there who don't go to church reguraly as well. again, my opinion i again reinterate i'm not better than you nor i'm i trying to judge you and as far as how good of a fisherman i am, that's really not relevant you've been bold about stating your opinion don't think for a second i'll not be bold of mine. am i cramming it down your throat? just about as much as your trying to cram yours down mine. dave
  43. 3/20/2000 10:19:00 PM twocrabs (63.10.43.97) from VIRGINIA says God and fishing
Judging not, lest I be. The truth is that I love Jesus and believe he is the only way-for me. I believe that we all approach God in different ways and that all roads to God are the right roads and all roads away from God are the wrong roads. Jesus lived for us and died for us so that we would all join him and the Father in heaven. I believe that my heaven will be eternity fishing and boating for God and I too would like to see all of us there together. Bottom line, God first, your brother next and fishing, in that order. How we get there is between each one of us and God. Now, let's give up this acrimony and join in the chosen professions of the apostles, serving God and fishing.
  44. 3/20/2000 10:40:00 PM CharlieK from TEXAS says Jesus said,,,,,
Jesus said ",,,,,and I will make you fishers of men." I think that every cast I make is a testament to Him, Sundays included.
  45. 3/20/2000 11:45:00 PM Stmp Jmpr from OKLAHOMA says rjy
No offense buddy, but some folks aren't as churchy as you and that doesn't necessarily make them bad.
  46. 3/21/2000 2:39:00 PM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
It is not for me to decide who is good or bad or ugly. And that is a good thing, because you can fool me. It is God’s job to be your judge. And no one can fool Him. I put no one below me. I may make you think about your position to God. And what you do with that is your business. When I think I have reached perfection, I get out of the boat and try to walk on water. Close to the boat ramp, of course. [Think that will hush the Boat Ramp Police?] All that I was saying from the beginning is this: [1] I think you should worship the Creator more that the created. And [2] I get in a bunch more trouble when I am not where I know I should be and not doing what I know I should be doing. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Thanks for jumping in Crank. Put on the armor. Your gonna need it.
  47. 3/21/2000 8:58:00 PM Bob S. from MICHIGAN says I would jump in on this but,...........................
I know the plank in my eye is much bigger than the sliver in everyone elses eye. PTL ><>
  48. 3/22/2000 11:34:00 PM Ricky from OKLAHOMA says Sundays
Hey guys some people feel closer to God out in his own creation, than in the house on Sundays. I fish tournaments and sometimes they are on Sundays. Fishers of Men tournaments are on Sundays, one of the most christian fishing groups out there. I am a christian, and when I am on the water on Sundays I am in my church. It doesnt have to be a big or little house with a pulpit, and a choir inside. I am also a member of fellowship of christian anglers, and fellowship of christian athletes through my local officiating group. I doesnt matter where you are, as long as you are thanking the Lord for the wonderful life we have. I have seen the Pros have a short worship service on Sundays before takeoff, they sometimes have a bible study session the night before the contest. If there is a will there is a way, and everyone has his own way. God bless.
  49. 3/24/2000 1:02:00 AM Daniel (63.17.249.13) from FLORIDA says Isn't this board for fishing???????????????
Theres lots of good questions and subjects on this board with no answers, yet all of you choose to debate religion. How about posting relavent fishing information, or responding to peoples questions about fishing for a change? Weather your in church on sunday or having sex with animals, who cares? Tell me where the fish are!
  50. 3/24/2000 9:56:00 AM Vanewbee (165.176.17.17) from VIRGINIA says I pray god forgive you for that statement Daniel
I really do pray he forgives you for your statement. For the rest of you let me say again THE ONLY WAY TO GET INTO HEAVEN IS TO ACCEPT JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR AND HAVE A PERSONAL REALTIONSHIP WITH HIM!. Now how you grow and nourish that personal relationship is a personal matter. some go to church, others spent hours a day praying and reading the bible, some have quiet time, some go witnessing, some do them on sundays , some do them on other days. It is ok to fish on sunday, you cant get into heaven through the church, ONLY through Jesus. If you trust in jesus he will convict your heart to do what is right for you. thanks
  51. 3/24/2000 12:36:00 PM fisher of fish and men (207.181.33.41) from MISSISSIPPI says Serviice
Its all about service to others not serving ourself. Good thing Jesus wasen't to busy fishing to give himself for us!!
  52. 3/24/2000 12:39:00 PM Phill (136.200.212.33) from CALIFORNIA says AMEN, Vanewbee!
I agree 100% with Vanewbee. One's relationship with his creator should be personal, and should not be required to be shown off and imposed upon others. And in response to Daniel, this is about fishing, fishing on Sundays. Some folks here are trying to outlaw it and I became alarmed. Don't want to repeat history. Who knows what else these folks want to prohibit, 7th day adventists worship on Saturdays, Muslims pray on Fridays....
  53. 3/24/2000 5:55:00 PM Sward (63.81.190.6) from ARKANSAS says Word of God a two edged sword
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shown it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Romans 1:18-20

But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. Matthew 12:36

  54. 3/24/2000 6:56:00 PM Jewish Fisherman (205.188.192.51) from TEXAS says Time to cut it out before it gets nasty.
I sure get tired of you Christians telling me I am destined to go to hell for not being like you. Some of you have stressed that you can go to heaven ONLY by accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. I guess Jesus's parents and grand parents, fine jews that they were, are now suffering eternal damnation in hell since they never accepted Christianity. You are also telling me that all of my deceased relatives and countless other fine people are currently residing in hell simply for not being Christians. We don't condemn you for your beliefs. Why do you condemn us?
  55. 3/26/2000 1:07:00 AM Ricky from OKLAHOMA says Thats not the point Jewish fisherman
Nobodys condeming you for being Jewish, at least Im not. What your religion of choice is none of my business, that is just one mans beliefs. For whosoever believes in him shall have ever lasting life, I believe the scripture says. I believe in my heart that there will be all religions in heaven. That is what this country stands for, FREEDOM OF RELIGION. There are some sick people out there who think you have to believe one way, that is the same kind of people who try to condem the government and other things. I lost some good friends who were inosent bystanders in the most horrible acts in the history of this country, and my home town, (Oklahoma City) but my faith in God keeps me going, knowing I will see them again. Once again your belief in the Jewish faith is not wrong, its your choice. tight lines, God bless. Ricky
  56. 3/26/2000 4:27:00 AM Phill (205.188.199.23) from CALIFORNIA says I stand corrected.
I apologize to Jewish Fisherman and agree with Ricky. No one's "religion" or belief is any more worthier than the other. No one has the right to judge another either. Frankly I don't believe that the after-life, if there is one, will be any different than situations experienced on this earth. There are those on earth who live in situations about as close to hell as you can get (Bosnia civilian war victims for example), and there are those who are so well sheltered you might say they are living in paradise. It certainly wasn't from anything they did, like going to church on Sundays, or not, that places people in their respective stations of life. It's alot bigger than what we do, think or believe. No one really knows. My point is, one can believe anything one wants, as long as it doesn't cause one to erroneously judge, condemn, and tromp on others. In the meantime, I will thank him, enjoy, cherish and celebrate the life given me in my Creator's creation to the best of my ability on a daily basis, including, fishing on Sundays.
  57. 3/27/2000 11:53:00 AM Rjy (204.212.225.2) from TEXAS says For every question mark
For every question mark, God has an exclamation point.

Because I was where I thought I should be this Sunday [in the house of God] doing what I thought I ought to be doing [prayer and worship], my son became convicted of his lost condition and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior this Sunday. If I had had any doubts, this would surely have erased them. There is a way, which seems right to man, but the end thereof is death.

  58. 3/27/2000 2:48:00 PM Jkr (136.200.212.33) from HAWAII says Boy Rjy...what's that stuff you're smoking?
Guess they're spiking the dope in Texas now huh? looney tunes. That's enough to get me to quit.

  60. 3/29/2000 11:30:00 PM Mike Fisher (205.216.199.74) from INDIANA says Something to think about...
A "Christian" wrote a letter to the editor of the newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me I can't remember a single one of them. So I think I'm wasting my time . . . and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall what the menu was for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: they all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me those meals, I would be dead today." No comments were made on the sermon contents anymore.

  61. 3/31/2000 11:15:00 AM Kla (216.77.155.10) from ILLINOIS says Not our way, HIS way
So many of you have written that you believe the Bible and that "you" believe that your diffrent religions are correct. If you believe the Bible is the word of God you must believe all of it not part of it. Read it, in its scriptures you will find there is only one way to get to heaven. His way!!
