SUBJECT: # 3438: Jet ski go boom!

Submitted by Stoopid Fish (216.80.159.222) from MISSISSIPPI on 5/2/02 12:04:00 AM

Mega Tube Man (AR) whom I sit across from at work insisted I post this... Last year at Sardis lake in MS my partner and I were calling it a day and loading the boat on the trailer for the trip home. At the same time, a few other boaters were launching including a jetskier right beside us. My partner winched up our boat and hauled it up to the top of the ramp where we began to cinch everything down. Now keep in mind that from my vantage point I could not see the truck, jetski or anything on the ramp, even standing up in our boat. I was just about to jump out and get in the truck when we heard a BOOM loud enough to rattle the lead sinkers scattered on the console. When I turned and looked towards the ramp I saw some dude flying through the air and bits and pieces of flaming Polaris showering the lake. If I could see him and not the truck then he was at least 10 to 15 feet in the air! Fortunately he landed in the water and was wearing his vest and (unbelievably) was not seriously injured. My guess was that he didn't vent his engine compartment before squatting on the seat, firing it up and being turned into Captain Combustion Chamber. It's funny now but it shook everybody up then and could have had a nasty ending. So keep a close eye on that inboard next to you and remind 'em (especially younger boaters) to vent those things before heading out or they might be the star of the next boat ramp story.
