I'm just before buying a 1997 Ranger R70 Sport with a Johnson 115 FastStrike motor. I would appreciate any thoughts about or experienced info with this make & model. Thanks.

   96 R70 w/115 Fastrike (long winded version) from drainplug #11086 #11086  10/1/2011 9:12:36 PM
I purchased my '96 R70 with 115 FastStrike, 16 years ago this week. Drove 8 hrs to Greene Boat and Motor , when they were still the #1 Ranger dealer. When the boat was about 3-4 years had a reed break and score a cylinder, had that bored and new kits put on all. That was the last problem I have had(knock on wood). I fish local lakes in PA, Canada on vaca...no real long runs, fish usually twice a week, March thru October and store the boat indoors. People who are not familiar with models usually are shocked when I tell the age. I put new "skins" on the bench seat, this summer, and redid the bunks on the trailer 5 years back. And the OMC trolling motor still runs and looks great, (replaced the lower unit 4 years back).
For a 17' boat, it fishes a little bigger, but I fish mostly by myself, and this boat is perfect for that. In my opinion. If you are going to fish buddied up, I would go with an 18 plus with a 150. The R70 will jump quickly on plane, with one person, I am 6'2' 245 lb It will be little slower up with two big guys (Raker prop). if it is good condition you will get 50MPH tops, GPS on a good day. These were/are a great little boat. That being said a 15 year old motor is a 15 year motor, I guess my history may not be typical, but the FastStrikes were a great line. Good Luck!

They are good boats, but that age you have to purchase it with the possibility of replacing a powerhead factored into the price.

Thanks guys. While I've owned several boats through out the years, I've never had to replace a powerhead. Any idea about the expense involved in that?

On what you can find when you need it and how bad you tore yours up. I've seen them fixed for $1000 and I've seen it take $4,000.00 or a new engine.

What condition is the boat in, and what is the asking price; just curious if I decide to sell mine in the near future?

NADA Average retail. The boat, motor and trailer are in great shape for a 97. 125 on all cyl. Gel coat good, seats & carpet are 7 out of ten. Motor Guide 12/24, Hummingbird finder/GPS. Maybe some issues with live well valves, not sure yet. Runs out good. This boat came from Greenes also.

I've got a '99 R71 w/ a Merc 125 on her & it has been a great boat. Those were the days when boats were built to last. Sounds like you exercised due diligence on your inspection. I'd give it a go.

Thanks from dsetzer  10/6/2011 6:30:11 AM
Thanks for your responses guys. I bought the boat.

We're still here! from Greene Boat & Motor  10/6/2011 1:10:26 PM
