    9.9 merc on 17' tracker.....need advice please
from Rad (

would anyone have any suggestions for me?.... I have a 96 tournment Tracker with a 9.9 Merc on it. Currently I can get it up to about 2800 rpm's. My questions; 1. Is that about normal? 2. If not, what would you suggest I do to get a little more out of her (if anything) Of course I know not to expect much from a 9.9, but I have never had a smaller motor like this one. The lakes I fish have a 9.9 limit that is why I went with this package. Any advice would be greatly appriceated!!

First ensure you have the 7" pitch 3 blade prop or the 6.5" pitch 4 blade prop. This should get your rpms up to at least 4500. Also consider upgrading to a 15 HP carburetor as it will fit your motor.
tv 17 and small motor from Larry (  4/19/1999 7:55:00 PM
Rad, we took off my 70 hp once to see how my TV-17 would go, well just 12 mph was all with a 15 johnson and power prop. Which was 3 mph faster than with the 70 on and the 15 on the kicker plate. The boat is to heavy for even a 25 to get it on plane.

Rad, I am in the same situation here in New Jersey. I have a Discovery Marine 14' vee. The biggest motor you can use on most lakes is a 9.9. I did upgrade the motor to the bigger jets and reeds to make it 15hp but no improvement. I'm thinking of trying a plate to get the motor up out of the water as far as possible but I'm not ready to put out $60 for someting that might not work. I did have the boat up on plane once but that was with no gear and I was by myself with a tail wind on a flat lake.
9.9 Merc. on a 16 ft. Bass Tracker from Ron Heaton (  1/20/2001 6:47:00 PM
I have tried many things to try to get more speed out of my 16ft. Bass Tracker with a 9.9 The best luck I have had was to get the cavitation plate aprox. 1" below the bottom of the boat This helped quite a bit with the top end speed. You also must have the trim set just right so you do not cavitate. I went from 17MPH top speed to 23 MPH top speed. Good Luck
