    Installing Thru Hull Transducer

 My flasher transducer developed a crack in the sealant so I removed it and tried to reinstall it. I used 3M 5200 Sealant at the insistance of a clerk a Boater's World. He told me not to use epoxy because if I installed it incorrectly it could not be removed. Tried the flasher today and it won't work. I know the transducer is good because I tried it over the side of the boat before reinstalling and it read same depth as my locator. Sould 5200 work or should I go to epoxy? Thanks.

 If your thru hull transducer is in the lower part of your rear bilge, add enough water to the bilge to cover most of the transducer. It should now work fine. Only problem is you have to leave the water there or it will quit again. This will at least tell you if the installation is faulty and if you keep a little water in the bilge, it will continue to work fine.

 If the 3-M sealant is silicone I don't think it will work. I have always used epoxy. Be sure to get any air bubbles worked out when installing.

 I am an electrical engineer, and have done commercial application designs using transducers very similar to those used in our sonar equipment.

The high frequency low power energy needs to travel through consistent dense materials to be effective. Any low density material will create a gap that will essentially "muffle" the signal returning (or failing to return) to the transducer.

If you have installed one with anything other than a hardened adhesive (such as epoxy), then you have reduced its effective output power, and its return signal sensitivity.

If you did this with yours, and think you got away with it, you are wrong - you just don't realize what you lost by using a poor installation procedure.

If you have siliconed a transducer in the bilge, and you have a layer of silicone between the fiberglass and the transducer, flooding the bilge with water will probably NOT help. Adding the water does not remove the harmful layer of low density silicone!

 It's compound as explained above will muffle your signal.

I would recommend first trying to get it back out. Clean the area to remove any of the remaning 5200. Get some marine epoxy, like they sell at Ace hardware, labled marine or plumbers epoxy.

Also get some modeling clay or caulk rope and form a circle around where your transducer is to be. This will make a shallow bowl to hold the liquid epoxy. Get both surfaces preped, mix the exoxy and pour it in the bowl. Let it set for a couple of minutes for any entraped air to work out, then set the transducer into it using an angled twisting motion. This will further remove any air that may want to get trapped.

Place a plastic bag full of sand on top of the transducer until it's well set!

Then go find that clerk, recover your additional costs in both time and materials. Oh get the clerk to committ to using/recommending 5200 in front of his boss first. You will get your dollars back.

If the store gives you crap, have them contat Mike from Tech 5. Mike worked at 3M's adhesive division for 20+ years.

   Another Note. Your Mounting A Shoot Through Hull not a Through Hull... from TopCat  5/4/2001 8:27:00 PM
 If you told the clerk, "Through Hull" then he in fact told you correctly that 5200 could/should be used.

A through hull transducer is mounted through a large hole drilled in the bottom of your boat.

A "Shoot Through" says you are going to mount the transducer inside the hull and shoot the signal through the hull.

 Marion, you may not like this, but I would mount the transducer outside the boat. I don't care what anyone says, you will lose sensitivity if you mount the transducer in the hull.

I understand the fact that mounted outside the hull puts the transducer in harms way, It doesn't look as clean and no bodt wants to drill holes in their transom, but for me it is worth the risk.
