Wiring for a 12/24 trolling motor

I have just bought a 94 ranger r70. The boat is wired for 24 volts and the trolling motor has a 12/24 volt switch. There are 4 wires in the back with a circuit breaker, red, orange, white and black as well as a short black wire. Does anybody know how I would wire this to two batteries to take advantage of the 24 volt system?

The red and black wires go to one battery (red-hot; black-ground) and the orange and white wires go to the other battery (orange-hot; white-ground). The two 12 volt batteries will form a 24 volt circuit at the plug. All four wires will go to the female receptacle in the front of the boat. The short black wire that you referred to must be for a charger or some other accessory.

The four prong plug, in conjunction with the switch on your trolling motor, will cause the motor to run on either a 12 volt or 24 volt circuit. Your batteries will last a lot longer on 24 volt, but you can achieve lower and quiter speeds on 12 volt.

The four prong plug (male) should be wired from the trolling motor as follows: black-one; red-two; and white-three. The screws for connecting the wores inside the male plug will be numbered. The number four screw will not have a connection unless you are running 36 volts.

Hope this helps.

24V TM Battery Hook Up - Sandman???? from Lee (166.50.71.104)  8/28/2002 9:17:00 AM
Have Motorguide TM w/12-24V toggle on ChampioN. My two batteries are connected as you say but also has a wire connecting the negative on one battery to the positive on the second. That the way you get the 24V, or leastwise what I have been told. Does the Ranger have a different hookup than the ChampioN for TM?? Regards, Lee
