    1991 Starcraft 16
from Claude (

I am looking at what I think is a good deal on a 16' Starcraft aluminum V with a side console. Comes with 40 hp Mercury with oil injection and a galv. trailer with spare tire and power winch. All this boat needs is a good cleaning. I checked it out once and I going to give it a really good look, again. This is a first for me so what should I inspect more closely?

And, can anyone shed light on 1991 Starcraft 16' that has factory carpeted floor, livewell, etc...? Any common problems?

I had a 2000 model Starcraft SF16 Camp utility boat. It was built like a tank being double riveted around the transom and down the chine. It was not a lightweight boat. A starcraft deep v hull is always a good choice. My brother-in-law recently bought a 16' Fisher v hull boat, and he admitts that it's not even close to the same quality.

Be safe, Duck

Claude, I have a 1985 Starcraft FM160 Fishmaster and being an earlier Starcraft it's not bulit quit as tough as the newer aluminum boats.

But for what I have put this boat through I can't complain. Mine is rate for a 90 horse but does thirty mph with the 86 40 horse Johnson. I use it down the sound to the race Plum Gut Hatchetts Reef and it runs from New London to Saybrook with no problem. I tralier it everywhere and I take it to the upper end of Lake Champlain every June. It's a good boat, and the 1st of March each year it's taken to Hilltop Marine in Colchester were Rob and Mike take good care of it getting it ready for the season.

If you haven't already bought this boat check that it has a automatic bilge pump, make sure the consol is secure and the steering isn't stiff. Check the motor for any signs of oil on the lower unit and check under the cowling.

And before you take it on the water take it to a dealer, not a friend and have them check and tune the motor including the low oil overheating warning horn. Hilltop Marine has been great for me. their at the junction of routes 16 and 149 in Colchester. Exit 13 off Rt. 2, south on 149 to light at Rt. 16, take a right and their on the left.

Good luck Oliver
