I have a friend who has an 03 225 DIHO and has never had a problem with it, so I bought a new boat with a 05 225 DIHO. It was a strong motor that got good gas mileage, but in 13 months I had 3 powerheads(one at 144 hours and the next at 21...), 2 lower units and 4 props(all rakers). Needless to say, I got rid of it and bought a 250 HPDI and I have been very pleased.

I have a 2004 200 HO. I tournament fish and I have had no problems with the motor. The motor is strong and fuel/oil efficient (for an outboard). I maintain my motor per the owners manual and it has been great.

I fish a LOT, pleasure fishing and tournaments. I bought mine new and have maintained it per manual. It will be my last Evinrude. If you get one make sure you keep a tow rope in the boat. I have thought about leaving mine at the shop and picking it up when I need it. I have had too many problems to list them all but here is some: blown engine 2 times (in tournaments), computer went out 2 times, throttle position sensor went out (in tournament, 30 miles from landing), starter nearly fell off, shift cable fell off, stickers on engine came off, constantly died when you take it out of gear when it is cold (they don't know why, numerous trips to shop to diagnose), and they EAT sparkplugs (60 hrs tops)that are a pain index and expensive. Had to wait nearly 2 months on an injector one time. Total shop time 6-8 months total in 2.5 years. Don't say you wern't warned.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the engine tilt bucks and kicks like a bronco. They can't fix it either, just one of them things.

You really only run into problems with the HO when you run a Mercury prop on them as far as I can tell.

Now Tony you know that would only affect the lower unit. You could tell them about the lower units. I didn't mention the lower unit cause I thought the merc prop was all that was holding it together. Actually I think the lower unit and the cowling (minus stickers) are all that are left from the orginal engine.

Wow!!!!! I can not tell you how surprized, shocked, and dismayed I am to read these negative reports on the Evinrude 225 HO. I have a 2004 Evinrude 225 HO and it has been absolutely bullet proof. It is very fast, very fuel efficient, and very very reliable. I have read many other positive reports on the 04 225 HO. My engine is also very quiet and has presented neither problems with the lower unit nor any other mechanical issue.

   2004 225h.o. from James Harner (  11/15/2006 7:27:00 PM
I have an 04 225H.O. and have had great luck with mine. Yes, the motor will jump trimming on occasion, but only if I have trim raised above normally operating range. I use xd100 in my motor along with Ring Free and have had very little carbon build up or spark plug issues. I would change plugs every 50hrs regardless of how motor acts. Indexing the plugs is very straight forward and not a big deal. I would buy another. Don't let the negative posts discourage you, I assure you there are more happy 04 H.O. owners out then there are unhappy ones. By the way have you ever heard of Mercurys or Yamahas having problems?????LOL

I own one with 150 hours on it. I use it every weekend and other than the spark plug issue mentioned above I have had zero problems. It is a very strong engine and does need plugs every 50 - 60 hours.

I've had my 04 225 ho for about a year, and so far have been very happy. The motor starts easily, runs very smooth and strong (pushes my heavy 521 to ~72 with a Tempest 26). That said, it has on occassion stalled when being put into gear - there may be a software fix for this. I have heard they eat plugs - the jury is still out on that for me, I haven't had any problems until the last couple of weeks when motor started idling a little rough with plugs only 2 months old - shop is looking at it now. As for gas/oil milage - I think I am getting about 3-4 mpg running at 4500-5800 rpm, not bad but certainly not stellar. All brands can and will break, especially with mistreatment - one wonders whether the same people who blow Rudes would also blow Yammies and Mercs.
