Are the Yamaha 250 HPDI engines still causing problems?

I remember reading on this board and on the BBC about the 250 hpdi's having some issues. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with these. I am looking at a couple of boats with the 250 HPDI on them and while all do have warranty on them, I do not want a boat that will spend more time in the shop than on the water. Thanks,

The only thing I can say is this, I had an 03 250 HPDI - blew with 6 hours on it and then again with 57 hours with only 4.5 hours at WOT on the ECM. Went to a brand new 05 250 HPDI and it blew with 14 hours on it with 0.0 hours at WOT on the ECM. Sorry, I'm not a Yammie Fan any more. There will be people say that have not had any problems and some that have HORROR story's like me. Just keep in mind anything man made will break, just give it time, but not like happen to me. Good Luck Glenn

I've not had a 3.3L failure this season.....never had many since the hi pressure fuel filters have been replaced at 50 hours on all.

We haven't seen any issues for a while now either, other than the high pressure fuel filter. A water seperator has solved that problem as well. Very reliable engines.

who is a regular here on the board has a '03 250 HPDI and he has had quite a bit of trouble with it. Most of the problems have stemmed from the cooling system. I don't think Yamaha has changed or updated the water pick-ups yet.

I have ran an 04, 05, and now an 06 with no problems except the low water pick-up gets clogged with grass if you run through a mat, but every motor gets that. I just slow down, trim down and it passes fine. My current 250 HPDI has 173 hours on it and turned the key on it in Feb.06 Did have one plug (#5) foul but no problem after that. Just my .02

My '05 and my '06 have both... from Marc (  11/23/2006 1:10:00 AM

   250 HPDI problems from mike (  12/10/2006 8:31:00 PM
Problems-problems-problems. I've been off the water 7 weeks total because of the engine. I have one on my SW Skeeter first engine blew at 20 hrs. the second engine blew at 73 hers (53 hrs on new ehgine). Currently in discussions with Yamaha Corp on what they want to do.

After first blew, 10um filter was installed but not the problem. My question, why were the three filters on the engine not enough protection!

Talking to other OB dealers to see what they think about their engine on a newer Skeeter!
