found a nice boat I like but it has a 2005 Evinrude 175 DI. Anyone know anything about these engines? Scared a bit because I don't want a Ficht. Dealer says it isn't, but I've heard it might be.

What year is the engine ? I have a 1988 Evinrude 175 and believe it or not, its still going strong. I would have to find out what year they made the Ficht engines because like you I dont want one either. Boy, if the e-tech engines are what they are hypted up to be that would be the engine to have. I have also heard good things about the Mercury Optimax. Good Luck. Bob

If it doesn't say E-TEC on the cowl, then it's a FICHT. from StevieP  9/12/2007 11:07:00 AM
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think BRP/Evinrude changed the "name" of it from FICHT to DI due to folks having a bad perception of the FICHT "name" but I'm pretty sure the technology was the same.

It should be a fine motor though. ONLY the old OMC 150-175 FICHT engines from 1997 - 1999 were the big problem models. Other displacements, and all the BRP FICHTs (made after OMC went under) were widely regarded as pretty good.

I'd still want to take it to an independent mechanic to have it checked out, but if it does, then buy with confidence.
