What's the difference in these two boats? Which one would you rather have and why?

Identifying Big Cats.... from Mike Whitten  4/24/2008 6:50:48 AM
..CW, the hulls of the two 20 BassCats are identical for 2008. The differences are in the layout of the interiors and fuel tanks.

Puma has a hidden net storage up front, with one large tackle storage, and two smaller divided storages, and a separate "day box" for tackle next to a built in cooler.

Puma has a 30 gallon fuel tank under the seats, with no under seat storage, plus two 10 gallon saddle tanks in the rear.

Cougar FTD has no net storage, and two large tackle storage boxes on the deck, with the "Day Box" inside one of them. Fuel tanks are two 26 gallon saddle tanks. You have underseat storage in the Cougar, as well as rear storage. The Cougar rear storage boxes are smaller than those on the Puma. Livewells are square on the Puma, triangular on the FTD.

Due to the fuel tank placement, hole shot is different on the two boats. My current Cougar FTD seems flatter and quicker by a second or so out of the hole, but this could also be the prop. Top end on both boats, with a 250 Pro XS and tournament tackle ( and I run loaded with toys ) is about 77-78.

Rough water ride is outstanding in either boat. Maybe just a slight nod to the FTD here.

I've run both boats over the past 4 years, and am currently in an FTD. If you want to talk details on either one, or have more questions, shoot me an email to

mdwhitten@comcast.net.

Best regards,

Mike Whitten/Germantown,TN
