Best boat for 9.9 hp lake
from Gerry, BFHP
12/19/2008 7:15:59 AM

For years I've been running a 16 ft Carolina skiff on our 9.9 hp lake. My wife has given me the go ahead to replace the hull. Any ideas about what would be a good selection (I'm already looking at the Carolina Skiff J-16 which is 300 lbs lighter then my hull.)

I want something big enough and stable enough to fish from a front platform.

I just got a Tracker 170 TX rigged with a 9.9, but haven't gotten it wet yet.

Gerry, take a look at the Basscat Phelix from RobShaw  12/19/2008 8:01:33 AM
Im very impressed with that little boat. Additionally, they are building some new models such as a Skiff Cat!

Pop's Marina in Toano should be able to fill you in on the Phelix.

I looked at the J-16 when I was looking for a flats boat last year. It didn't quite suit what I wanted but it seemed like a good boat for the money. But there are a whole bunch of manufacturers making skiffs in that size. One boat you might want to look at is a Ranger Banshee or Banshee Extreme. It's a very nice boat.

I use to have a SeaArk SilverWin Bass. 16ft carpeted with a livewell, tiller handle, did real good with a 15 hp fourstroke.

just go onto Craig's List for your area and you should find many good jon boats that are fixed up to fill what you are looking for. Just slap the 9.9 on one and save you a lot of $$

something to consider from Beartrap  12/19/2008 6:42:54 PM
you can use an aluminum boat in rivers with might dent the boat a little but rocks will knock big chunks out of fiberglass....also aluminum boats won't fade with age and you can leave them out uncovered and it won't hurt them near as much as glass.....

You should check out Bass Cat's "Skiff Cat" before you decide. It will be well built and backed by the best customer service in the industry.

Stick with the C skifs from BobP #11078  12/21/2008 11:46:44 PM
Roomy and very good value for the money, light hull. What's not to like for that specific circumstance?

Why don't you take a nod from the northern folks from Scout  12/22/2008 7:41:12 PM
and just put a kicker on your big bassboat? That way you've got it all right there.
