Help with Minn Kota Edge 55

just ordered a 55 lb thrust, 12 v Minn Kota Edge trolling motor after years of using a Motor Guide and Johnson, but need advise on two things. The high gear of the 55 lb thrust doesn't seem any more than the 45 lb. of my old Johnson. My battery is fine. The instructions say use 6 gauge of heavier wire. I think I have at least 8 gauge. Would that make a difference?

My main problem is that that the on/off switch must be pushed flat with the petal to ingauge, and is hard to push. The result is difficulty steering while trying to push the switch in. I have tighten the tension on the steering cable, but still is a problem. Exaiming the switch, I see the two springs, but I don't see an adjustment on the on/off switch. I keep thinking that maybe the motor is shipped that way, and there is something I am suppose to remove before using.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

   Agree, 12V MinnKota 55 is weak from Tim #10364  5/10/2009 9:40:59 PM
compared to 24V, Motorguide or OMC 44-46lb. I experienced the same disappointing loss of pulling power when I switched to a 55 lb MinnKota. I was expecting a 15% increase but actually got a 30 % decrease.

As for the switch, my MinnKota switch is elevated but requires the pressure mostly on the left side of the Large On/Off buton. Mine is not an Edge, so I am not familiar with that model to know whether it has a different size switch.

Thanks for the reply. After some reading, I think the deal may be difference in how thrust is rated - maybe large prop vs. smaller prop. I am glad that I didn't get the 46 Lb. thrust. I would have been underpowered. I am getting the same voltage at the motor as I am at the battery, so I don't thin the problem is in the lead wires from battery. Now, if I could jsut figure out how to may the switch easier. Will try removing one of the springs.
