Stuck In Gear from BobH #11015 #11015  4/1/2012 6:50:44 AM
It's probably your throttle cable. I had a problem that my boat moved forward in both neutral and reverse. There was a small plastic knob on the cable that broke. I had to get the cable replaced.

You have 2 cables hooked to your throttle handle. The Throttle and Shifter. They get old, stretch out. Sometimes they break, sometimes they stretch so much they won't move the linkage enough to shift right.

Other minor possibilities:

Throttle handle is wore out: They have plastic gears in them that work to actuate the cables at the right times as you move the throttle. Sometimes these gears get worn down, broke and can slip or jump time.

Something came loose or slipped in the engine's linkage.

The problem is most likely the cable, but it could be worst. Disconnect cable from shifter at the engine. Then see if the shifter at the engine will allow the geas ti shift freely. If it does, then you just have to adjust the cable linkage. If it doesn't, then you have a lower unit problem.
