Rated:

My 3.5 year old grandson shifted my brand new (hasn't been through the break-in procedure yet) Optimax 115 into reverse with out the motor running, something that the owners manuel says NOT to do. What kind of problems may I expect if any? Thanks Terryk.

Never heard of that from Jeff Hahn  7/8/2012 10:10:49 AM
I have never heard that a new motor should not be shifted into reverse when not running. I can't imagine that it would cause a single problem

Apparently, when the motor is running' the lever on the motor is easy to move. When it's not running, that lever is very stiff. If forced someting could give cable, clip etc. I seriously doubt a 3 year old could break anything though.

My Tech says Mercury recommends not shifting to ANY gear with motor not running. In addtion they recommend you not raise the rpms above idle while in neutral.

   I didn't check to see from terryk #16024 #16024  7/8/2012 4:40:58 PM
how hard it was to shift into reverse. I only shifted it back to netural and left it (along with explaining things to a little boy) but it didn't seem stiff or hard to shift into netural from reverse. Also I stated that my motor is new but it is a new 2010 model. Hydra 196, ask the tech why they don't want us to shift while the motor isn't running. I assume it is for the reasons that Fisherboy stated in his response. Terryk.
