    Best Flourocarbon Knot

I have trouble with flourocarbon snapping on hooksets. Is there a knot that will prevent this? Otherwise, the line is tough as nails, but this has happened repeatedly.

a Palomar Knot for fluorocarbon . Every other know I have tried has had problems and the Palomar knot is quick and easy to tie and is very effective. It gets around the most common problems of fluorocarbon. Take a 12"piece of fluorocarbon and tie an overhand knot and draw it tight. Hold each end tightly and give it a quick snap. It will break easily every time. Most knots work on the line in the same way(trilene know, uniknot, improved clinch knot, etc.)but the Palomar's double strand allows for the shock of the hook set. I know of no other knot that works as well for the amount of time and effort needed to tie it.

The Palomar and fluro has not worked for me. I busted many Palomar knots on hook set. Went to SDJ and end of problems.

is the only knot I have ever used on any line. Flouro must be wet before you cinch the knot!

I use the Uni-knot for all fluorocarbon connections except for a Drop-shot hook-then the Palomar for that.

What brand of fluorocarbon? from ChuckieC #16203 #16203  6/17/2012 10:43:52 AM
I wouldn't be using a knot that breaks on the hookset. I use Berkley Vanish and Stren Fluorocast and the palomar knot has worked well. If the knot had been breaking on the hookset I would have changed long ago. Other brands of flurocarbon or fluro combo, sheathed, etc. have not worked well for me for lots of reasons, including lack of limpness, castability, kinking, and breaking on the hookset. Fluorocarbon still has many negative features but its advantages outweigh them. If you tie the palomar properly with Vanish, wet it, and cinch it carefully, then breaking on the hookset would be the least of your problems with flurocarbon.

I use the trilene knot but with 3 loops thru the eye instead of 2, this stopped hookset broken knots.

It did not stop broken lines at hookset. Florocarbon is brittle, and will break with sudden hooksets. While it will stretch as much or more than mono, it will not take shock stretching. You will have to adjust your hookset.

Been using a Palomar knot with fluorocarbon for years. Never a problem. If you're breaking off, you're not tying it correctly.
