I have a friend looking for a quality baitcaster (new) with a direct drive feature. I can't seem to find any in the catalogues. Any help would be appreciated.

Roger

Direct drive baitcasting reels from Keith (204.177.179.100)  9/20/1999 5:43:00 PM
Hey Roger, the only true "direct drive" baitcasting reels I know of are either very old baitcasters (before drags were invented) or the "D" series Ambassadeurs of the 1960s and 1970s. They were the 4000D, 5000D, and 5500D. I have three of them and no, they aren't for sale. I'll show them to you one of these days. There have been people that have modified other baitcasters to a fake direct drive, but they still have the drag that one would have to crank down as tightly as possible. As you know, drag washers will go bad quickly leaving them compressed tightly for long periods of time. You might want to contact Linc's Tackle in Seattle to see if they still convert baitcasting reels, and if they do, which ones. What does your friend intend to do with a direct drive baitcaster??

You're correct Keith, but I'll add to it. Quantum made several reels with a direct drive switch, two of which I have - the 1420 and 1421. Shimano also made reels with a direct drive switch. However, these reels have been discontinued as far as i know. I haven't seen any new reels in the catalogues with a direct drive feature. There is a guy in Port Angeles who can modifty Ambassaduers and install a direct drive switch. I had such a beast one time. It worked fine but I went thru a lot of pinion gears. Thanx for the response Keith -
   Daiwa Magforce MA1000X from roadtoad (207.71.192.253)  9/21/1999 7:21:00 AM
Being a conventional fan, my only low-profile reel is this MA1000X, which is selectable for either 5.2:1 or 1:1, and it has the magnetic deal that really helps if you're flinging lightweight bait. I don't do much flipping or pitching, but 1:1 is really fine for finesse & bumpy-joe with a crank. Only mod I've made is a bearing swap for abec7. Don't know if they're still available, but if not, you'll want to have eBay do the automatic search for you until one comes up.
