Rod and Reel for Alabama Rig

I was out this weekend and threw the Alabama Rig for the first time. I had no control with it. I was using an old Shimnano Curado 200 and I couldn't get it adjusted not to backlash if I did more than lob it. that is normally my frog reel and has 65lb test braid on it. Also using a St Croix MHF 7 ft Avid Rod and it probably wasn't heavy enough although I've heard that it was OK for this. What are some suggestions? I really don't normally use any heavy rods because I'm not a good pool player and don't need a cue stick.

the reel. Just too much weight on the rod tip and not allowing a smooth cast. I think the 'ole greenie' will handle it just fine. Big difference between a 3/4 oz frog and a 2 oz @ rig. I'll let the rod guys suggest something, but you most likely need a swimbait rod.

Any combo that will handle a swimbait would handle an a-rig.

I haven't fished one yet, but everyone I have talked to that has says that you don't "cast" an A -rig, you LOB it. If I recall from the FLW show, Elias would also just lob it out there.

Curado 300E paired up with a MH Cumara 7'11. Works great with 4 breaks on. The ole Greenie 200 should'nt be a problem. Rod choice would be more important with this application.

300 E on Dobyns 806 is the ticket. Or in my case the hard to find 301E from Wackoman  2/27/2012 11:05:36 AM

You'll have 500 bucks plus tax, shipping and line in that outfit but just think....you can catch your limit with one cast and go home!

I have a used custom 8' Fast Action, Heavy power SCV with matching brown carbon fiber handle, spiral wrapped to the right with Flexlite guides. I'll let go for $100 plus shipping.

It's been around the block, but it's bullet proof and will handle anything you tie on to it. Will double as a swimbait rod, or magnum flipper. It's a beast.

Can you get it here by EOB Thursday? nm from Wackoman  2/27/2012 11:59:45 AM

Disregard the e-mail. Let me see if the wife can swing by Fed Ex tomorrow.

What do you think about the Shimano Crucial Swimbait Rod? They have one that goes up to 5 ounces and one up to 8 ounces at 7'11". I need to take my rig off and weigh it. My wife has a postal scale.
