Rods and Reels

Boy, I sure got told yesterday
from Bender, MS Gulf Coast

Very few times over the last few years have I had to sell a reel because it was never picked up but I had to a couple of weeks ago.,

A guy brought me 8 reels back in the first week of October and when they were finished he promptly picked them up and brought another to get done. That was the 2nd week of October.

I have called him and called him and was told each time that he would be by in the next few days. Never did. Then he started not answering my calls or returning calls. He called about 2 months ago and said he had a heart attack and would be by the shop on Monday because he was ready to do some fishing. Did not. Called him back two weeks later and he said he was out of town and would call his son to pick it up. Never did. Last week I sold the reel to a customer who had been eyeing it every time he came in the shop.

Yesterday, the customer called and was on his way to pick up the reel. Sorry Guy but it is gone.

He could not understand why I did not tell him I was going to sell it and I was cussed up and down about it. Then he said that the reels I did for him in October did not work right (I offered to repair for free if this was the case and he dropped the subject)and I was a real Azz (nicely put) for selling now his SON's reel.

Where do we find these folks? Can I please make a dollar or so for sitting on his equipment for 8 MONTHS?

Somehow this doesn't surprise me. from PPEN  5/23/2012 2:30:01 PM
Seems like there are so many folks whose word is meaningless so this is not surprising. My dealings with you have been great. If some folks have unreasonable expectations of you that is their problem. That customer sounds like one of those horrible "one percenters". LOL

when my shop was up at a marina for nine years, i ran into all kinds of doozies. I had that happen to me as well, I put up a sign that said" If you leave a reel here 30 days after repair date and not picked up, don't even think about it, the reel is mine-all mine."

Funky and I had one of those from Fisherboy #10852 #10852  5/23/2012 5:18:34 PM

I built a rod for this dude. He picked it up the next weekend (four hour drive) and paid in cash.minus the deposit for the parts.

He calls and orders another rod. No problemo, don't sweat the deposit, you can pay me in full when it's ready. This dude called and e-mailed back and fourth through the whole build (just like the last time). I finished it in two weeks. Not a peep after that. I would call leave a message. We swapped a few e-mails "I'll get it soon."

Over a year later he calls about picking it up and wants to order another one and pick them both up at the same time.

No problemo. Send me the money for the first one.

I got the money for the first one and never built the second one, just told him that we were even.

Then I sent him to Funky for reel service ... LOL

Working for the Public from g2072  5/24/2012 12:06:34 PM
I am a firm believer that everyone should have to work in a public job for at least one year. Some people have no concept of just what any business owner faces. After being in my own business for several years I could write a book about some of my experiences. I had many great regular customers that made it all worth while but I also had some that were a royal pain to serve. Some people just think they are more important than they really are and it must be quite a shock to learn the hard way that the world doesn't revolve around them.

But those minor few have found out over the last 30 years that I can tell them to pizz up a rope real fast.

It's a "select few" though from minner  5/29/2012 10:36:34 AM
Don't let a couple folks taint your taste for society. I have come to the conclusion that most folks are genuine, but there are a few that will commit the same acts over and over to different people.
