SUBJECT: # 36756: ABU EON 3600SE vs Curado 100B

Submitted by Jon G. (70.186.212.209) from VIRGINIA on 4/3/05 9:38:00 PM

Need a recommendation on these two reels. Got a buddy of mine selling me his Curado 100 for $50 bucks. He says he perfers the Curado 200. Anyway, at my local WalMart they have a EON 3600SE for $50 on clearance. I can only get one or the other unfortunatly. What reel should I get and why? Thanks for the input. Jon G.

Curado = excellent, durable, popular reel. Eon = bad, breakable, unpopular reel.

  2. 4/4/05 12:35:00 AM Submitted by Scout from KANSAS says I totally agree with Wej.
Same reasons too. I've seen Wal-Mart blow out Eons for $30. Even if you could get one that cheap, I'd go with the 100 for $50. I've got two. They're good little reels. I don't recall the Eon being well-liked here.

  3. 4/4/05 7:16:00 AM Submitted by Heartland Tackle Service from KANSAS says The CU-100 is a Super Free model as well
Just another plus for the Curado, in top of great reliability and durability. I have to agree with the fellows above -- the EON, along with the old 2-speed models, are the only Abu Garcia models I won't service.

The Curado 100 is not a true SuperFree, so I'm told. But I own three of 'em and consider them true jewels.

I also have three of the older EONs. They are smooth, powerful, but if you even breathe on the thumb bar during retrieve, the levelwind disengages. Well, you shouldn't be thumbing during a retrieve anyway.

BTW, I got the EONs for 19 bucks apiece from a truly seedy Wal-Mart in South Dallas.

Apparently, Abu-Garcia thought enough of the original concept to resurrect the EON. I think the little 3600 is an OK reel with a great drag system.

I suggest you handle both and remember that, if you find the new series EONS for a bargain price, say in the 50-60 buck range, that's two EONs for one Curado! John

Used Curado 100 by a landslide...

  6. 4/4/05 9:54:00 AM Submitted by Pa Jack (68.234.221.248) from ALABAMA says I am Puzzled
A reel repair owner said the Curado 100 is superfree and John from Texas said they are not. Is there something in the water in Texas or what.

There is another guy from there that also seems to be really confused also.

  7. 4/4/05 10:02:00 AM Submitted by John (67.9.124.220) from TEXAS says All I can say is...
That the 100b is not listed, OR priced as being a SuperFree and (I wish I could remember where,) some authority stated the same thing. No matter, since I'm hooked on the little critters (100Bs) and don't much care one way or the other. BTW, what's in the water in Texas? A lot of bass! LOL! John

  8. 4/4/05 10:21:00 AM Submitted by Ken (207.69.137.205) from MARYLAND says !00 B is superfree...
Has superfree pinion but not perforated spool. It's the pinion design, not the spool, that makes it "superfree."

  9. 4/4/05 10:42:00 AM Submitted by Waveman (144.30.7.40) from ARKANSAS says what Ken said
    n/m

  10. 4/4/05 11:57:00 AM Submitted by Scout from KANSAS says Ken is definitely correct.
Like I said, I own two of them. Check Shimano's website. Surely they are advertised as superfree. They just lack the wiffle spool which, as was said, has nothing to do with the "superfreeness".

  11. 4/4/05 12:31:00 PM Submitted by Pa Jack (68.234.221.248) from PENNSYLVANIA says The Deciding Factor Concerning Superfree
If the spool has a bearing on the spool shaft behind a pin it is not a superfree as far as Shimano goes.

  12. 4/4/05 12:51:00 PM Submitted by KatDawg (208.255.233.2) from TENNESSEE says Get the Shimano
According to Shimano SuperFree = " bearing supported pinion gear system eliminates friction between the pinion gear and spool shaft for increased freespool."

The 100B has this...well at least the 101B's I have do.

  13. 4/4/05 1:00:00 PM Submitted by John (67.9.124.220) from TEXAS says I guess I...
listened to the wrong folks. I wonder why they don't use the "SF" designator in the tech data and catalogs.

Now, of my three 100Bs, at least one is four years old, and the others at least three. Was there a change after the these were made?

In any event, I love my 100Bs. Just wish they were maybe another ounce lighter and that the pawl caps were not so fragile.

    John

  14. 4/4/05 3:55:00 PM Submitted by Scout from KANSAS says I still have
the box from one of my Curado 100B's. It says right on it "Shimano Super Free Bearing Supported Pinion Gear System". I have no idea what their website says. It's confusing because they use Superfree as part of the 200BSF's name. Really it would be more accurate to call that reel a 200W, since it has the wiffle spool and both the 200BSF and 100B have the Superfree system.

This has all been hashed out before on here. I don't know if I've had mine three years, but it's been quite awhile.

  15. 4/4/05 4:30:00 PM Submitted by Pa Jack (68.234.221.248) from ALABAMA says The Curado 100 B
This reel has been the same design since its inception. Acually it was out before or around the same time as the Curado 200 BSF.

Shimano's marketing sometimes leaves something to be desired.

The Curado 100 B is a derivative of the Japanese Market Scorpion 1000/1001 just no wiffle spool and External braking feature.

You can with adding the spool from a US model Chronarch 50 MG have the wiffle spool.

  16. 4/4/05 7:17:00 PM Submitted by Jeff l (205.188.116.8) from ILLINOIS says john from texas
you can change the cast cap assembly ,to the metal one found on the chronarch 50mg ,it sits closer to the frame than the stock one ,so there is no problems with it loosening up on you. the assembly is only 3 bucks at heartland tackle.
