SUBJECT: # 36757: Aaron Martens Rods

Submitted by ttjones (68.83.62.75) from PENNSYLVANIA on 4/3/05 10:43:00 PM

I believe that Aaron MArtens uses Megabass Rods. I've never seen one, but I looked at their website and see that they are quite expensive. I would like to hear from anyone who has used them - just how good are they and what makes them different from other top-end rods?

  1. 4/4/05 12:23:00 AM Submitted by Scout from KANSAS says Megabass Rods: 3G breaks
    oops! I mean uses some of those rods.

    j/k

    lol

  2. 4/4/05 12:35:00 AM Submitted by Johnny A (24.228.44.135) from NEW JERSEY says Megabass Rods
    Okay, take a Loomis rod or St Croix and put it in a pile of $60.00 rods and blindfold an angler or put a non-angler in to choose one, it will look like every other rod. Put in a Megabass and it will stand out like a thoroughbred in a pig sty.

    Megabass rods are well built both cosmetically and "mechanically". Here's my formula, I use a Megabass rods for my primary applications. I use a Team Daiwa Battler rod for my secondary applications, I use a Rapala Rod for remainder.

    Pitchin = Megabass

    Finesse = Megabass

    Spinnerbait = Megabass

    Topwater = Team Daiwa

    Crankbaits = Rapala

  3. 4/4/05 1:45:00 AM Submitted by The Natural (68.97.2.208) from OKLAHOMA says I don't like the flashy look
    I've seen the megabass rods, and still wouldn't trade one of my glx's for one. Do you think the megabass blank is twice the blank that a glx is? I certainly don't think so. I think most of the extra money goes to asthetics. I compare them to the japanese cars running around with body kits, graphics and high spoilers. Forgive me if I sound like I am bashing you, because with opinions noone is wrong. I actually prefer the matte gray finish and traditional cork of the loomis. All I need is the little gold Gloomis stamp on the blank to make me smile. To each his own...Michael

  4. 4/4/05 3:57:00 AM Submitted by George's Custom Rods from IDAHO says DS rod...
    If you want a drop shot rod with a hinged action, I can build you one on the Shikari SHII-P7000 blank. Extremely light tip (~18") with a butt section possessing the power just less than a P703 blank. Very unique action. Choose a Split Rear Grip (or SRG Extreme) / 1/2" Comfort Button to reduce the weight even further. Custom built with Alconite guides for about $225 shipped to your door. RECoil guides add about $50 to the price but add less weight.

    If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me. Anticipated waiting time right now is about 6 weeks.

    Good fishing........George

    Yep I bust them but then the rod was quite altered.....

    They are great rods no doubt but there is the line of diminishing returns. The 'trick' or 'bling' factor is high and there is no copying it.

    For pure function........George can get darn near if not exceed ANY factory rod (and most customs). His build quality is second to none....

  6. 4/4/05 12:28:00 PM Submitted by Hydra (12.22.21.44) from ALABAMA says Simply the Best
    Megabass is not for everyone, but they are the most artistically pleasing rods on the planet. They are built using the latest materials by the company named on the rod. Functionally, the top end Croix and Loomis rods could be built by say George to be comparable. However, thats about where it stops. The Megabass rods are wasted on most , but if you have a flare for the exotic you owe it to yourself to get one, or 2, or 3. It is like smoking a cuban cigar, unless your really into cigars, it would be wasted on you.

  7. 4/4/05 1:18:00 PM Submitted by Johnny A (24.228.44.135) from NEW JERSEY says Another bite at the apple
    Okay, let's get this going back in the right direction. It's like anything else in life, good looks can only get you so far. If you don't have the performing power, well, you may as well stay at home.

    I have used Loomis. I have used St. Croix. I have used Megabass, TD Japanese and Evergreen rods. To a degree, there is a certain level of diminishing returns BUT in certain applications, finesse and other touch sensitive methods, I would go with the Japanese rods.

    Quick aside to Gx3: How long before ice out? I want to know how the Evergreen checks out.

  8. 4/4/05 1:35:00 PM Submitted by GGG from MICHIGAN says Ice............
    it is pretty much gone !

    I will be spending lots of time in your area real soon.....new business project

  9. 4/4/05 4:30:00 PM Submitted by RedneckfromRI from RHODE ISLAND says aren't they..............
    Priced around the $400-$500 range??

    IMHO there is no reason for anyone to spend that kind of money on a rod................You could have two really nice "Customs" made for that kind of money.....

    I dont know many weekend anglers that are millionare's!!!But hey if you want to throw, Go right ahead....

  10. 4/4/05 5:03:00 PM Submitted by smalljawbasser from TENNESSEE says sure they're nice, but
    are they filled with unobtanium, and lighter than air?

    well are they???

    i think not!

    I think thats a little crazy to pay 400-500 for a fishing rod.after reading there warranty ,you get 1 replacement after you break 1 then your on your own.

    "IMHO there is no reason for anyone to spend that kind of money on a rod................You could have two really nice "Customs" made for that kind of money....."

    Translated using circular logic.....IMHO there is no reason for anyone to spend that kind of money on a custom rod................You could have 10 really nice Lightening Rods for that kind of money.....

    Arguing on price is never smart......performance and warranty is where to argue. I wouldnt pay near retail price on Japanese rods.....and I have not done it yet. I will say that after comparing high end custom vs. Japanese.....there is not much difference in performance (and often the custom is better) but there is no arguing the Japanese bling factor.

    GGG

    PS, Jeff.....good luck getting the first one taken care of from what I have seen.

    "Spend your money, take your chances"

  14. 4/4/05 9:30:00 PM Submitted by Hydra (67.23.252.31) from ALABAMA says You get what you pay for
    The top rodbuilders will charge you damn near the price of a base megabass rod when you get down to it, unless you skimp on components. The top of the line Loomis will cost you as much, or more. It is only when you getting into the Megabass Evoluzion series that you start dropping down some serious cash. However, not signifcantly more than some high end loomis that Johnny points out. GGG makes a good point the argument is on performance and warranty. The warranty just sucks. The performance is subjective. The bling factor is not disputable. However, I gurantee you this , if you ever buy one it will not be your last. I think Johnny has put it best on several occassions it is an addiction.

  15. 4/4/05 10:02:00 PM Submitted by RedneckfromRI from RHODE ISLAND says Ggg
    Thats why I have been building my own rods for 10 yrs. The rods I build myself have 0 bling factor. For me its all about the functional aspects of the rod. The rods I build for friends and others(they have a choice but with bling they cost more...)

    I agree that $$ is not a good thing to argue about!(but its the bling your paying for in the japanese market. Just look at their crankbaits and prices.)

  16. 4/4/05 10:24:00 PM Submitted by Johnny A (24.228.44.135) from NEW JERSEY says Sometimes it's more than the "Bling Factor"
    To follow up a little bit on the Evoluzion Megabass line, the Hedgehog Line, etc. Some of the components and component materials are extremely bleeding edge techs. Another aspect is what people accept as "top of the line".

    What passes for top of the line in the U.S. wouldn't be used for bird cage liner in Japan. Got any doubts? Look at the Shimano Scorpion, the TD-X/Z and other tackle on some of the other sites.

    Add into the equation the material quality that goes into Japanese baits. I have some Team Daiwa crankbaits, made of lexan that are many years old, caught a lot of fish and have contacted a lot of strong structure. Hooks are still sharp or take a point when needed, lips are still intact, colors still a lot intact.

    You pay one way or the other.

  17. 4/4/05 10:45:00 PM Submitted by RedneckfromRI from RHODE ISLAND says ...agree to a point
    Johnny A, I agree to a point on the Japanese components that are ahead of what we use in the US... There are a bunch of Fuji products that arent available to us in the US unless you can contact someone in Japan and deal with them direct.

    But its like running a 800MHZ computer. If you never touch a 2.5 gig computer you will never know that your 800 is slow.

    So if you stick with a Curado and dont touch a Japanese Shimano you will never know either. Like I said if you have the $$ to burn then go for it but most bass fishermen that I know wouldnt pay that kind of money.(they would rather buy 3 TDA's or Curados as apposed to 1 japanese reel)

  18. 4/4/05 10:48:00 PM Submitted by jimmyb (209.103.210.171) from WISCONSIN says yep, you pay...
    very dearly... when that monster pike comes and chomps your $35 pro blue megabass ito 110, breaks your megabass rod on the hookset, then cuts thru the toray BAWO flourocarbon, and you throw your tricked out yellow and pink TDZ with a carbon fiber handle overboard in disgust!

  19. 4/5/05 12:04:00 AM Submitted by Johnny A (24.228.44.135) from NEW JERSEY says Well, if you're too inexperienced to know
    the difference between fishing tackle designed for bass and muskie, there's always the zebco 808 and a broom handle. But then again, only an inexperienced angler would believe a muskie that could break a Megabass wouldn't break a Loomis.

  20. 4/5/05 12:15:00 AM Submitted by RedneckfromRI from RHODE ISLAND says ummm
    Johnny,

    I really think Jim was making a joke....................

    Muskie tackle doesnt cost as much!

  22. 4/5/05 3:14:00 AM Submitted by Chad Heitman (129.230.241.5) from TEXAS says Who cares about it looking good.
    I want a rod to be sensative and durable. A life time warranty doesn't do anything to put that moster fish in the boat. Proven durability is what I'm talking about. I liked Hydra's cigar analogy, but come on. Since when did a Bass fisherman care about a rod designed by someone on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. I'm not gonna pay anything extra for how good it looks. But then again I use Falcon Lowriders (@$100) and I don't think the bass know any different. And as far as fatigue, come on guys this isn't power lifting for 12 or 13 hours now. I've thrown traps all day, and DD-22's all day tired yes, but nothing like high school football 2 a days. NUT UP and be a MAN!

  23. 4/5/05 9:53:00 AM Submitted by GGG from MICHIGAN says LOl Chad.............
    You are right !

    Let me sell all my equipment and buy Falcons (and get a free patch). I mean come on now........you are obviously a much better fisherman than I because you use lower priced equipment and do not care about artistic values. heck man, you bunch of southern weenies.....This Yankee ought to come to your state of Texas and teach ya how to fish, I heard you all had some decent fish anyhow. I bet my pretty rods would outfish your falcons !

    *GRIN*

    LOL........thanks for the funny post !

    GGG

    PS, durability and sensitivity are not exclusive properties in fishing rods.

  24. 4/5/05 10:56:00 AM Submitted by Danco from MICHIGAN says Chad your too funny
    Do you hang out here often? This is the board of high end and custom rods. Most of these guys would not have a Falcon on their second string! LMAO

    But hey dood to each his own. If your happy with your hundred dollar Falcons more power to you. But don't rip on people because they have nicer stuff than you. That's kinda like saying Corvettes sux because all you can afford is a S-10.

  25. 4/5/05 6:15:00 PM Submitted by Texas Smoke from TEXAS says Often times
    it's not "what you can afford" it's what you CHOOSE to afford.

  26. 4/5/05 6:42:00 PM Submitted by Texas Smoke from TEXAS says And Danco
    skyhook wanted me to tell you that he can afford 100 Megabass rods if he wanted to, he just has a hard time casting due to his arm being out of socket all of the time so he doesn't see the benefit.

  27. 4/6/05 9:31:00 AM Submitted by Danco from MICHIGAN says LOL Smoke
    Point taken but don't crap on my wheaties. LOL

    Skyhook needs to take up boche ball.
