SUBJECT: Bait at Weldon

Submitted by Bassfever (98.26.54.247) from NORTH CAROLINA on

I am going with a large group to Weldon for a week of striper fishing and are wondering what the bait situation is like up ther now. A previous post mentioned bass minnows for $7 a dozen and a guy who sells bait from a boat near the big rock? I assume the minnows were from Roanoke River Outfitters. Last year they had shad the first part of the week and they were like $9 a dozen for large and a $1 each for jumbo. They ran out of shad while we were there. The shad seemed to work better than minnows but are harder to keep alive. We used to catch herring from the river but I understand that is illegal now. Last year we spent a small fortune on bait. Any advice on where to get some good cheap minnows or shad is apreciated! We live in Raleigh.

Thanks!

We did buy most of our minnows from Roanoke River Outfitters. They had a few shad as well, but did not recommend them as the bite was pretty strong with minnows. We bought minnows on the water when our first batch ran out. Not sure how long he will continue to be on the river with the season ending in a couple of days. He gave me his cell numbers...

    252-673-3673 and 252-219-9347

Give him a call and see how long he plans to stay out there. For cheap bait, I recommend buying in Raleigh and bringing minnows with you if you have a tank that will keep them alive for your trip.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and the phone numbers to call. I appreciate it! I will check with him to see what his plans are. We ae fishing next week so I imagine he may not be there. We are going to try to bring some minnows with us too because we know that the outfitters place opens later post season especially mid week.

Hi, this is Tim & Angela, we are the ones selling minnows on the river & no they are not from Roanoke River outfitters. We have a bait & tackle store located 6 miles west of Roanoke Rapids,on highway 158. The name is ( t-n-a bait -n- grocery). Thanks Angela

Angela, Thanks for responding. Are you done selling on the river for the season or will we need to visit your store? What are your store hours and how much are the minnows. Our group will hopefully need lots of bait next week (M-F) and we will come see you.

    Thanks, Scott
