I read the article yesterday too, I wonder if the Ale Wifes are the real problem, if so why doesn't Fish and Game stock another bait fish like Blue Backs or something thst can handle the warmer water. I thought Stripers went down deep for Oxygen not bait.

  2. Jaybee (152.16.235.196) from NORTH CAROLINA says alewives/bluebacks
Alewives and Blueback Herring are essentially the same fish. You'd have to dissect them and be an amateur ichthiologist to distinquish the 2. Buggs has had them for years and the largemouth guys and some striper fishermen blame them for our recent decline in average size. Jordan had a bad striper kill last year and there are not herring of any sort there. It does not take much to start a snowball effect to ruin water quality. An influx of a pollutant, an algae bloom(and subsequent die off), or a bottom turnover can deplete oxygen very quickly and fish have to be able to escape that layer of water. Unfortunately striper are not very heat tolerant so often have a problem finding water that contains: oxygen, food, and tolerable temperatures. The last thing you want is some government agency adding another varialbe to the mix( read BLUE CATS)....
