SUBJECT: # 10935: towmaster trailer tires????

Submitted by bass-coach (69.8.35.198) from OKLAHOMA on 2/22/05 3:24:00 PM

Can anyone tell me anything about towmaster trailer tires? I see where most people on this board suggest marathons and I see the name carlisle show up, but my tire man says that these towmaster tires are a good tire. I'm not going to argue with him on this, but I will say that he is a fellow fisherman and is also offering me a discount because of this. If anyone can give me some pros or cons on this I would appreciate it.

No experience with TM radials. When I bought the present rig used, the trailer had TM bias tires on it and they ran hot and lasted about 3000 miles. Not many reports on this board on TM radials, but I would expect that they'll give decent service if you're not pushing the load rating, say 50-60 percent as opposed to 80-90 percent.

On a boat trailer. Do the math and check the ratings. Some places will try to sell you a heavier tire when you don't need it. A boat isn't much weight compared to some other things.

Don't let someone talk you into a regular tire for a trailer. There is a difference in the sidewall construction and other factors involved when designing a trailer tire they are made different then car tires. Thats why you can't go by just the rating. This info I got from a design engineer from Goodyear. If you want to save money do it on something that doesn't involve your safety.

I'm not just interested on saving money. That is the tire they have in stock and what he suggested. I know I need to use a trailer tire and will only purchase a trailer tire. Was just wanting to know from anyone out there if they had anything bad to say about them.

Hearing they are made by goodyear sounds like a good deal though. Any comments about that?????

Coach, I'll recommend the Towmaster radials to you. I've been running a set for about 2yrs. on a single-axle 20' boat trailer and they have shown very little wear. I just ordered another pair due to a bonehead move on my part that resulted in a punctured sidewall. Put the two new ones on the trailer and move the used one to the spare. I feel they are a good deal. Here's where I got mine http://store.yahoo.com/brutttires/towtrailtir.html

Towmaster is made by greenball (greenball.com) some are made in the US others made in malaysia for the most part they were good tires but we had two bad batches that were wore out unevenly and at a very accelerated rate. Factory support was so so, now we use Loadster they seem like a very good tire but have only been selling them for a couple of months these were all bias ply not radials. R/Mike
