SUBJECT: # 11889: 2000 Triton (MFI) trailer springs

Submitted by Ted (70.117.251.165) from LOUISIANA on 4/22/2006 10:53:00 PM

I have a 2000 model TR20 supported by a tandem axle MFI trailer. It has single leaf springs. These springs were reported to have problems but I've never broken a spring. I'm thinking it's time to change them. Is it time to change now or should I keep going? Do I go with multi-leaf or keep the singles? Where do I get a good set of springs?

Ted I have the same rig and I just did mine all new about a month ago. Like you I never had a problem but I think it was just a matter of time. Cost me $448.18 for 4 new 4 leaf springs and all new hardware. It was about a hundred more than I expected but i can sleep at night.

Mine were done at a Truck and Trailer spring place. Two buddies actually found the place when they broke their springs ( Non MFI ) last season. I got wacked on the price I know but it would have been too big a project to tackle myself.

Between this and 4 new tires,2 boat buckles I've dropped about a G into the trailer but what are you going to do. If it wasn't such a rust bucket it would be like new right now.

    Good luck

I don't have much rust on the trailer, just a few spots that aren't too bad. I'm working on the rust spots now and I'll replace the springs too. If I had to drop a grand or more into my trailer, I'd replace it with an aluminum trailer.

what are yall doing to your trailers? ive got a 00 tr-22 and my friend has a 97 tr-21 and neither one of us has had a problem yet. never heard of replacing springs. you need to be a little less rough with your equipment.

The monoleaf springs used in the late 90's carry a 1 year warranty on them. If you break one, the manufacturer NHK will do nothing. Inspect your spring and locate the spring number, usually stamped in the steel on the part of the spring that forms the circle around the shackle bolt. The last three numbers will tell you the conversion. If the number ends with 708 it will be a 3 leaf conversion, a 709 will be 4 leaf, and 710 will be 5 leaf. All springs were 26" eye to eye and weight capacity ran 2250#,3000#, and 3750# for 3,4,and 5 leafs.

  5. 4/25/2006 8:48:00 PM Submitted by Got2fish from MO says Call MFI... (TI trailers)

And give them the serial # off of your trailer.. There was a recall on certain trailers, with the serial #'s they will be able to tell you if your's was involved in the recall or not.

I had my springs replaced on a 2001 tandem trailer at no cost from a Triton dealer. Good luck.
