SUBJECT: # 13071: Trailer tires

Submitted by jdkd #13035 from INDIANA on 5/12/2008 10:55:00 AM

I need to replace my trailer tires, what are some other good trailer tires instead of the Marathons? I have not had the best of luck from my last 2 sets. I have searched a little on the internet, and Goodyear marathons are the only trailer tire I am finding, I am sure there must be others?

I read that post, and checked Kelly Tires web site, no trailer tire information to be found?

I run kelly charger tires which are passenger car/truck tires and have run these for years with no problems.....a friend who is also a well known tourny fisherman and very knowledgeable about tires owns the kelly tire store in this area and many of us locally run these tires and I've never had any problems nor do I know of anybody who has....for what it's worth,Basscat puts passenger car tires on their trailers and has for years....

While I agree with Bear that as long as the tire has the proper load rating an LT radial tire should probably be OK for a trailer; there also are people who will say it's not safe.

The reasons I've read most often involve the construction of trailer tires. They are made to be stiffer and thicker, especially in the side walls. This allows them to safely take the type of forces applied to the tire during trailering. I've also read that passenger car or light truck radial tires will cause more sway at highway speeds.

I've never towed a boat trailer with LT radials but I understand that several boat manufacturers put them on their trailers. I'm on the fence with this one; I think it would be OK but I really am not 100% sure.

Use Carlisle, Nexen or Maxxis. All are 6 ply tires. Goodyear Marathon are only 4 ply.
