SUBJECT: # 13072: s-10 shocks

Submitted by soggybottom #12100 from VIRGINIA on 5/12/2008 11:34:00 AM

I need new shocks on my 03 S-10 Crew Cab 4X4, I tow a TR 186 with it and am looking for some advice possibly a better stiffer shock than what comes on it from the factory. Not that the factory shocks were bad, just curious what may be better for towing.

Monroe "Sensitracs". My truck is a little different - 2002 GMC 1500 Sierra (2WD). I wanted to restore the good ride my truck once had (has 89,000 mi on it) and did not want to stiffen the ride. Sensitracs claim to have progressive damping - the heavier the load, the more they will stiffen to absorb it. So far I like the unladen ride, towing remains to be seen, however I hauled my Triumph Bonneville(450 lbs.) in the bed last week, and the truck rode great. Don't be fooled by "Heavy Duty" shocks, they'll ride like a buckboard with no load. Truly you shouldn't be adding THAT much weight if your boat is located properly on the trailer (maybe 400 lbs. tongue weight?) My opinion, stay as close to stock as you can, with a good quality shock, you'll be happy.

    Jim

I've had Bilsteins on the last 4 trucks,, they came on 3 and I put them on the last one and I would never buy anything else now. Fantastic shocks. Here's where I got the last set and they were almost 40% cheaper than the parts stores here and they were here in 4 days. http://www.eshocks.com/bilstein.asp?gclid=CMSztLnHoZMCFROTggod9yuuoQ

    I'll second the Bilsteins!

Last year I put the Bilstein HD's on my Tahoe, much firmer ride, greater corner control, and keeps the rear-end from sagging as much when pulling the boat.

Monroes are good for 10,000 to 20,000 miles and then they're shot. They are quite often "bad" right out of the box. Pure GARBAGE.

I just put a set of the Bilstein HD's on the rear of my Tundra. They are NOT too stiff. They did make a drastic improvement over the stock Tokicos in terms of dipping, especially when towing the Kitty. They also will last the lifetime of the vehicle. I didn't studder, I said LIFETIME.

Shockwarehouse.com had mine to me in two days.

They came stock on my 99 Taco and sold it a year and half ago and bought my current Tundra. The truck was rock solid short of the O2 sensor stories I have touched on in other threads.

I pulled my Ranger 185 for over 3 years with that truck on trips that were 1000 plus miles round trip. Never had an issue with them.

If it was my vehicle it would be one of two. either Bilsteins or Edelbrock SAS shocks. I have run both and been 100% satisfied with both.

The thing i really like about the edelbrocks is they do ride nice and soft on the freeway and over small bumps where the bilseins teend to be a little stiff in my opinion.

Just had the Bilsteins put on today, they seem to ride real nice, they are the HD's. The front shocks were shot, and the mechanic said the Bilsteins were really good shocks and he asked where I got them. Thanks for the info.
