SUBJECT: # 13400: Low-Vis Venting

Submitted by Fisherboy #10852 from VIRGINIA on 11/3/2009 4:59:00 PM

Low-vis because I posted it on this board. Venting because the ole lady took the truck into the shop yesterday.

The check engine light came on, so I told her to take it in. She gives me a call and says, "they said it's the EGR valve."

Okay, I could do this myself, but heck, it's just an EGR valve, she's there and I won't get to it until Saturday.

"Go ahead and have them fix it since it's in the bay."

I get home and look at the bill ... $384 and change! WTF?

I went on line and looked up the EGR valve $39.99.

So $40 for the part, $70 to hook to the computer, $120 shop supplies and the rest labor.

$120 shop supplies??????

That's what I get for being lazy and going to a dealer.

I would call the service manager and calmly ask for an explanation of the charges. If this is a dealership where you have purchased a vehicle in the past I would also discuss this concern with the sales manager.

I'm off Friday, so I might have to drop by and do that in person. I bought the truck there as well as a previous vehicle. But it's the only time I've used their service department.

That seems like robbery. It's been years since I worked in a shop, but I can't remember any "shop supplies" we had that would cost even a quarter of that. Also, it used to be pretty standard that if you got the veicle repaired, there was no charge for the scan. I guess the times have changed. I would be very interested to hear their explanation.

One tip, unless they have changed their policy, Autozone (and maybe others) will scan your vehicle for free.
