SUBJECT: # 13472: What's happening with my trailer?

Submitted by stp357@gmail.com (98.192.123.53) from GEORGIA on 8/29/2010 3:26:00 PM

From a standstill, when I accelerate there is a thump as if the coupler is is not securely attached to the ball if that makes sense. A slight hesitation then thunk! Any ideas? It's an 02 Easy Loader.

a long shot but I have seen it more than once. Is it possible that your trailer ball has 3/4" shaft and it is in a receiver that has 1" hole? Noise comes from trailer ball shaft sliding back and forth. If this is true I suggest you get a ball with 1" shaft. They also make a spacer for the 3/4" shaft but I wouldn't go that way unless your boat is small.

But this is a recent occurrence. Coupler and ball are correctly sized.

My guess is that you have brakes and the shock in the tongue is worn out.

  4. 8/29/2010 8:48:00 PM Submitted by Beartrap from GA says mine does all the time
check and see if your receiver has a little play in it....i.e. you've got a horizontal pin that holds your receiver in the slot on your hitch and doesn't take but maybe 1/16th of play and it will make that "thunk" when you take off....

Ease into it when taking off and it doesn't do it very much.

  6. 8/29/2010 11:09:00 PM Submitted by Jeff Hahn from OH says Beartrap likely nailed it
The same thing happened to me and to my tournament partner. The pin through the draw bar augered the round hole in the draw bar into an oval shape. It didn't have much play, but just enough to "clunk" every time I took off from a stop. I bought a new draw bar, but my partner just used a steel wedge and drove it between his draw bar and the receiver, which works fine too, as long as you don't have to remove your draw bar very often.

May be a product on this site that will help. Good luck, Tom.

  8. 8/30/2010 8:10:00 AM Submitted by Jeff Hahn from OH says One more thing
If I recall, someone on this site talked about cutting a piece of old tire and inserting it in the receiver and then inserting the draw bar. The old tire will act as a cushion and take up the slack, stopping the "clunk" on take off.

  9. 8/30/2010 12:39:00 PM Submitted by billsp from NJ #10879 from NJ says Silicon it in
I solved the loose ball mount in the bumper receiver with a liberal coating of clear silicon that I had leftover and in a caulk gun. Let it set for a day before use and no more clanking noise. Had to tie a rope to the ball and pull against a telephone pole to remove it. ))))

  10. 8/30/2010 1:22:00 PM Submitted by MikeF from FL says could be several things
It could be any of the things listed above or even the fit of the ball in the hitch or the brake assembly on the trailer. I would stand next to the trailer and have someone move it forward and reverse and identify the problem before I tried to fix it.

  11. 8/30/2010 11:56:00 PM Submitted by stp357 from GA says Thanks guys
I appreciate everyones input. I think I'm going with MikeF's suggestion first.

  12. 8/31/2010 9:24:00 AM Submitted by fishsmart #10374 from TX says Pin Clearance
Likely the locking pin in the receiver is not large enough in diameter and allows movement everytime you stop and accelerate.

Loss of fluid in your brake system. Could be many of the things above, BUT, every time you stop - you compress the fluid in the system - and when you take off - the slack in the actuator "clunks". Bleed or rebuild your system - I did mine & the noise dissappeared.

  14. 9/1/2010 8:55:00 AM Submitted by Beartrap from GA says since we got all these theories
when you figure it out,be sure to post on here what was causing it......you can save yourself the trouble of hooking the boat up just by checking the play in that locking pin...if it's not snug...that's where your "thunk" is coming from....

  15. 9/2/2010 2:12:00 AM Submitted by stp357 from GA says Will do Beartrap
Hopefully by this weekend if I can find another set of hands.

  16. 9/2/2010 6:27:00 PM Submitted by drainplug #11086 from PA says This worked for me
I had the same clunking, bought one of these: www.softride.com/towing-products/specifications/alumi

  17. 9/2/2010 6:27:00 PM Submitted by Beartrap from GA says one hand will do it
grab your trailer ball and see if the receiver will move either forward or backward...1/16th or less will cause that "thunk" when you take off......doesn't do it slowing down and I suppose it's because you slow gradually....

  18. 10/25/2010 9:17:00 PM Submitted by cancow from CA says Trailer Thump
I have the same problem and I have a 2001 e z loader for a skeeter. I don't think it is a ball problem. Actually I am quite sure it is not a ball problem. It could be two things: Do you get the thump when braking and when taking off, if so then you have air in your lines, you will need to bleed them.

If you only have it when starting up from a stop your plunger or the "actuating system" which is in the coupler is bad. I replaced the actuator and it removed the large thump.

This is a UFP product and when I talked with them they said there is pretty much always a little thump when taking off from stop. The fact that the plunger is compressed and you start up it is opening up and the 1 inch it has to travel is your thump. When you store your boat and the you pull out the coupler from the compressed position this is your problem. Go ufp.com and you can order a new plunger and then spend the next 2 hours or so installing it and bleeding the brakes.
