SUBJECT: # 13532: Protecting bunk carpet

Submitted by Jeff Hahn from OHIO on 5/10/2011 10:45:00 PM

I thought I asked this before, but could not find my previous post. I redid the carpet on the bunks of my Lund trailer a couple years ago. I put a double thickness of carpet on the front and rear of the bunks to reduce wear. However, just under the rear of the boat, just in front of the transom, is a seam where two pieces of aluminum come together. This seam is sharp enough to ear through the carpet. So, last summer, I cut some rubber pieces from an old car floor mat and wrapped that around the rear of each bunk and stapled and bolted it in place. This worked great. The problem is that this rubber dry rotted and is just about in shreds.

Any suggestions on what I could use to redo the rubber matting that wouldn't dry rot so fast?

Without seeing them it's hard to know for sure but I would think that might be a place to recess in some type of hard plastic like starboard and carpet up to it front and back.

if you got enough bunk lenght, make you a carpet "condom" and slip one over each end of the bunks.....when they get worn out, make couple more....actually it isn't gonna hurt anything for the carpet to wear through in couple of places...I've got couple of bare spots on ends of my Ranger trailer that have there for 3-4 years(and i don't lose a bit of sleep over it)...

They also make some for middle bunk use.

Thanks to all. Those Bunk Enders look like they'd do the job and not need to be replaced every year. I'll order some with my next BPS order.
