SUBJECT: # 13535: Cool hubs

Submitted by RonU from ILLINOIS on 5/25/2011 2:08:00 PM

I installed cool hubs on my 96 Ranger trailer several years ago. Now I replaced the bearings and seals now my caps keep working off the hubs. I called Ranger and was told to clean the site glass, because it pushes out when the oil heats up. Instead of the site glass pushing out the cap is coming out and once the cap came off. There is a spring and two rubber seals on the plastic site glass, which I cleaned and lubed. Anyone have this problem with cool hubs and a solution to my problem? I have a tournament on the June 3 and it's a 170 mile drive and it would be a pain to stop every 20 miles and tap the hubs back in. Any heip would be appreciated!

Personally, I wouldn't mess with tapping the hubs...too much to potentially go wrong. A friend had this same problem with his Champion trailer. We roughed up the outer edge of the cap using a file and also VERY SLIGHTLY bent the lip of the cap outward to give it a little more friction on the inside of the hub. Finally, once you get the cap started in the hub, put some red high temp silicone on the cap before tapping it into place.

Ranger called back and suggested the center punch with the red RTV. I like the ruffing up the cap and bending it out. AT least now I have a more confident feel about the cap staying on. If and when it quits raining I'll take it for a drive and hope it fixed! Thanks for the the help it sure was appreciated! RonU

Tried the center punch method and no luck. Next tried bending the edge of the cap in four places and compressing the cap in a vise. It took a 2lb hammer as it did when it was new to install it. Went on a 35 mile drive and it's fine. Also waitted 24 hours after installing the red RTV before installing the oil in the hubs. Just one question, what good does that o ring do? Thanks again for the help! RonU

Ron: Read your reply above and just wondered...You didn't drive your trailer 35 miles without any oil in the hubs, did you?

The O Ring on the front is supposed to help seat the cap...although with the red high temp silicone, I'm not really sure it's necessary. But, I still use one!

The o ring just doesn't look like it does anything like you said. I waitted 24 hours just to make sure it set up before adding the oil and than went for the drive. A little mistake on my wording. Thanks again for all your help Jeff! RonU
