SUBJECT: # 5127: New Expedition, gas mileage?

Submitted by Jack (63.28.142.236) from TEXAS on 2/22/2001 11:01:00 PM

Got a new Expedition with the 5.4 and trailer tow package. Rear ratio is 3.31. Just wondering what kind of mileage some others with this vehicle are getting. Also, FoMoCo says use 5W20 oil and I haven't seen this grade anywhere. Where do you get it?

  1. 2/23/2001 8:53:00 AM Submitted by KSBasser from KANSAS says Congratulations on the new Expedition
It's what I would buy if I had to replace my F-150 today. However, I'm afraid that you may be disappointed with the towing performance with that 3.31 rear end unless you tow a very light rig. My choice would have been a 3.73 or 3.55 at the lowest, definitely with limited slip. I can't help you with the gas mileage.

As to your oil question, take a look at your local Wally World. You should be able to find 5W20 in Castrol GTX for sure. I wonder if you really need that light an oil in Texas? Take a look at the chart in your owner's manual. Look at the highest temperature listed for the 5W20. If you will have temperatures ABOVE the highest temp shown for the 5W20 (remember that this oil will be in your vehicle for 3 months more or less), I'd use the weight specified for the next higher temperature. I live in Kansas, use 10W30 year round in all my vehicles, and they all start and run just fine even at below Zero temps. These are not low mileage vehicles -- 98k, 155K, 175K, and 190K miles and still going strong.

Just my experience and $0.02. Enjoy your new Expedition -- KSBasser

I have a 2000 model identical to the one you bought. 5.4l with the 3.31 axle. I only have 4500 miles one it and the best tank was 13.5 mpg. That is mostly around town driving. I have not pulled anything with it so I can't give you any results on pulling. I have had a vibration problem with it though. The dealer fixed it by replacing the tires and three of the wheels. I have not changed my oil myself on this vehicle yet. I plan on going to synthetic Mobil 1 10w30. I believe in the Texas climate that 5w20 is a little thin.

Jack, go to www.f-150online.com, and get ready to stay all day. Go to the message boards and post your question, they have one for Expiditions and you might want to place it under the engine section also. I am surprised you got the factory towing package with that rearend, I thought the 3.55 was the highest that came with the towing package at factory. Anyway, go to that site and you will be amazed at the amount of info.

  4. 2/23/2001 1:47:00 PM Submitted by TomT from VIRGINIA says Expedition
I have a 99 EB with 5.4 and 373, at 55 (no air on) 19 MPG with air on 17 MPG and in and around 14-15 MPG. Towing at 55 mph - no overdrive - no air - and fully loaded Stratos 201 Pro 14 MPG.

  5. 2/26/2001 2:51:00 PM Submitted by DanF (198.204.105.35) from LOUISIANA says Expy towing/mileage
I have the same setup as Jack (except a '99). I have 20k miles. I tow a 6500# rig w/o any problems - but - in La. the only hills are the bridges). In hindsight, I wish I would have gotten the 3.73 but, the 3.31 has never failed me on any ramp yet.

As to mileage, pure stop & go subburban/city driving is 10.8 mpg. Pure hwy. is 17-18 depending on load. No way is anyone getting 14 mpg in all city driving. (Unless it's down hill all the way!!!) Towing at highway speed, no O/D with a/c on averages about 10to 11 mpg - thats over a 100 mile run on mostly rural roads at 55 mph, about 25% is stop and go.

Also, My owners manual calls for 5w-30. Have used same oil since new.

  6. 2/26/2001 3:39:00 PM Submitted by Tommy Z (152.135.230.4) from TEXAS says Shoulda bought Chevy
No flame intended. The new GM motors are highly efficient, if that is a concern in your truck. My 2001 1/2 ton Suburban 4WD with 4.10 gears gets 14 city, 18highway.

  7. 2/26/2001 4:04:00 PM Submitted by bassin-kid from TEXAS says Gas Mileage
As far as towing I say 3.73 rear end As far as gas milage on a new vehical my ford f 250 4wd. gas 5.4 lieter triton new got about 8 miles per gallon. After I hit 12,000 miles it went to 18 mpg. pulling the boat. Gas milage gets better when its broke in at 12000. I have a 4.10 rear end Bassin-Kid

  8. 2/26/2001 4:16:00 PM Submitted by Phill (136.200.212.33) from CALIFORNIA says What's TomT and TommyZ smoking?
TomT: You sure you have the right vehicle? Is so, then, where did you learn your math? No way are you getting those kinds of gas mileage on a FORD EXPEDITION! We have a whole fleet of them at my office and we get around 10-12 mpg, 13.5 at best. Those beasts weigh over 6000# apiece.

    TommyZ: You had me ROLFLMAO!

  9. 2/27/2001 8:47:00 AM Submitted by MudgeMan from ILLINOIS says It all looks good on a trip computer
Don't believe what they tell you, just divide gallons into miles since the last fillup. Ours was showing 16.5-17mpg. In reality, we were getting 13. Chris

  11. 2/28/2001 7:19:00 PM Submitted by TomT from VIRGINIA says Math!
I have a BS in math and I borrowed it at Duke. Now about my numbers - they are accurate, of course being from Virginia where ethics and your word mean somthing, I guess a Californian just wouldn't understand. The only thing I have done to the vehicle, is added a true dual exhaust system and as far as you believing my numbers - who cares what you believe, tough.....

  12. 2/28/2001 11:58:00 PM Submitted by Jack (170.49.43.2) from . says Thanks all...even Tommy Z...
Buy a Chevy?!?! been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, will never happen again. My company vehicles are Chevies, and my experience with them isn't so great. BTW, the owner's manual calls for 5W20 ONLY and doesn't contain the chart with the temperatures and different viscousities. This disturbed me as well because I am a died in the wool synthetic fan...of Mobil 1 in particular. I do appreciate the responses, even the ones I got a good laugh out of. I like the Expedition even more than I thought I would.

  13. 4/12/2001 7:00:00 PM Submitted by Tom (24.112.158.233) from Canada says 5w20
Hello, I've just recently purchased a new FORD 2001 that recomments 5W20. Here is why Ford/Honda are using it. I hope this helps:

Primary Applications SUPERFLO 5W-20 has been developed for the latest model year Ford and Honda gasoline vehicles to improve fuel economy and reduce high temperature engine deposits.

Although most late model North American built cars specify an SAE 5W-30 grade engine oil for use year-round, Ford and Honda have selected an SAE 5W-20 grade as the preferred grade for their vehicles to reduce fuel consumption. Extensive field testing by the engine manufacturers have demonstrated that there is no compromise in engine durability in gong to this fuel saving oil grade.

Superflo 5W-20 has been engineered to meet the proposed ILSAC GF-3 and API SL improved oil standards.

    Next Generation Oil Standards

The current oil categories that are approved and licensed by API are ILSAC GF-2 and API SJ. For the last 3 years the industry has been developing an upgrade to these categories to be called ILSAC GF-3 and API SL. These new standards have significantly improved fuel economy and improved high temperature deposit performance. They have been delayed from the Jan 2000 initial proposed timing and may not be licensed until late 2001.

However, these proposed categories offer performance advantages that Ford and Honda chose to use in most of their 2001 model year cars. Superflo 5W-20 is engineered to meet this new quality level and is supplied as factory fill for some of these 2001 model year cars.

    Performance Features

    Fuel Economy

SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains a potent friction modifier system for improved fuel economy to meet the new standard proposed in ILSAC GF-3. This is significantly higher than the current standard in ILSAC GF-2

    Excellent Engine Wear

SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains effective anti-wear additives that minimize wear and scuffing of heavily loaded parts such as the valve train.

Deposit Control/Engine Cleanliness The detergent-dispersant additive system in SUPERFLO 5W-20 has passed a double length Sequence IIIE test demonstrating that it can minimizes ring zone deposits, ring sticking and liner scuffing. The potent additive system in SUPERFLO 5W-20 also prevents sludge formation that can lead to plugged oil filters and screens, stuck valve lifters and other related problems. Maximize Oil Drain

SUPERFLO 5W-20 contains potent oxidation inhibitors to retard oil breakdown and reduce varnish and lacquer deposits.

    Low Temperature Performance

SUPERFLO 5W-20 exceeds the low temperature requirements of 5W engine oils ensuring that adequate oil flows to critical engine components during start-up.

    Improved Catalyst Compatibility

SUPERFLO 5W-20 is formulated with an additive package that is designed to protect the exhaust catalyst ensuring reliable operation.

    Lower Volatility

SUPERFLO 5W-20 is formulated against the proposed ILSAC GF-3 requirements to protect the emission system and minimize oil consumption.

    High Temperature Foam

SUPERFLO 5W-20 meets the new foam requirement, ensuring your engine is protected from wear in high engine speed accelerations.

  14. 6/10/2002 8:14:00 PM Submitted by sforsgren (65.174.147.202) from ARIZONA says Gas Milage
We have a 99 Ford Expy, 5.4, 3.73 limited slip rear end, and tow a trailer with several ATV's on it frequently. We get the same gas milage as TomT, however sometimes we use Overdrive, and it drops the trailer towing milage to about 11-12. The higher the RPMs, the lower the gas milage. Just had an awful noise in the car, a grinding sound, jerky driving, they replaced the 4WD module. $307, including labor. Still ran bad, but the battery ran down just before they replaced it, and the more we drive it, the better it sounds. Grinding noise is now gone, after driving it about 150 miles. We are wondering if it was the electronic tranny controls re-adjusting? Drivetrain seems fine, (checked by two mechanics, including Ford). We have over 88,000 miles on it, and have only replaced a spark plug that shorted out (due to condensation from the air cond.), and the 4wd module when it had about 20,000 miles on it, and had to put new calipers on the front brakes at about 76,000 miles. We change oil every 3-4000 miles, use 5w30. Does ping a bit when starting, until warm. Anything we can do for that? No leaks, doesn't use oil. No other problems, we are very happy with it. Great for our large family (8) (Could use more luggage space, we use a hitch carrier.)
