SUBJECT: # 8614: Chevy Silverado Or Ford XLT And Why?

Submitted by Steve (208.8.222.204) from WASHINGTON on 1/29/03 4:05:00 PM

New truck time. I've never owned either a Chevy or Ford. I've always been a Dodge truck owner but I don't like the new Dodge trucks. Convince me why I should buy the Silverado or the XLT.

just go drive both and decide what one YOU like best. Both are good trucks, its really a decision you need to make for yourself because its your money and you have to drive it. If you are trying to do research so a search here there has been so many posts on all the trucks that you can stay busy for hours reading.

  2. 1/29/03 5:05:00 PM Submitted by Jc (66.66.5.226) from NEW YORK says Heres what I did...
I owned 3 Dodges 95,97,1999. I had problems with all of them. The trannys were junk and I had major pinging that they could NOT fix. I am a major supplier to DamChrysler so I got a discount of 3% under dealer cost. I then started looking at Chevy and Ford. Here is what i thought of both. I knew I wanted a 4x4 with a tow pkg and v8 engine with the ext cab. I felt the Chevys rode the best but the interior and bodys were cheesy in my opinion. I liked GM's motors and they looked easy to work on.The Gm's I drove rode nice but lacked power when I hooked up my 20ft Bassboat. The cabs leaked air and seats and carpet looked real cheap. Then I drove the F150. It rode rougher and sat higher than GM which I didn't care for. The power was alot better than the GM's I drove and when I connected the boat they pulled alot better. This is probably due to more HP at lower rpm and more torque at lower rpm. The body and cabs seem alot better made. The interior seats and carpet seemed a better quality. the engine looked harder to work on but the noise in the cab was alot less than the GM. It just seemed a heavier duty truck not like a car with a box!All and all I bought the F150 and I love it! My buddy bought a GM the same day and so far I have spent O on my Ford and he blew the transfer case the day he bought it on the way home from the dealer ( they gave him a free 100k warranty to keep the truck)he blew the tranny at 3700 miles, replaced the brakes at 10k miles, the paint is flaking from the hood at 18k miles. And it works harder to tow his 18ft bassboat than mine does towing my 20ft bassboat. I think the Ford is the better deal,my .02

  3. 1/29/03 7:37:00 PM Submitted by Reel Work from TEXAS says Why don't you convince yourself...
Steve, We are not the ones that are putting our money down and driving it... YOU ARE!!!What I may like, may be the exact thing you detest and vice-a-versa... I personally like the new Dodge trucks! LOL

Both are good trucks but personally, with the current models, I prefer the Fords... I have had 0 problems with mine at 10k miles..

Now step away from the keyboard and go visit your local Ford and Chevy dealers, do some test drives and let the trucks speak for themselves..

    Later,

    Chris (ReelWork)

  4. 1/29/03 7:41:00 PM Submitted by Reel Work from TEXAS says One more thing....
If you're interested, it might be smart to wait a few more months since Ford will be introducing the newly redesigned 2004 F-150 with a more powerful 300HP 3 valve/cylinder 5.4 V-8... If you don't like the 2004's, then disregard..

Check em out at www.f150online.com, there is a nice gallery of assorted photos and Ford.com also has some nice pics..

Brad (Got2Fish) is a Ford employee and he can probably send you some if drop him an e-mail...

    Later,

    Chris (ReelWork)

P.S. - Hey Brad, How ya been doing buddy!

I would look at a new 2003 dodge 1500 with a HEMI before i changed completely. The looks of the new dodge will grow on you,I personally dont like the new Chevys.I currently own a 2002 GMC Sierra X-cab Z71 SLT,I like the truck, but my next one will be a 4x4 dodge 1500 x-cab w/ the 5.7L HEMI.

At least give the Hemi a chance.

let you keep a truck for a few days, that is what you should do. but Give them a test in every dept. that you will be using the truck for. Then make your choice.

I switched years ago to Fords and haven't been disappointed since 1980

  9. 1/30/03 8:59:00 AM Submitted by mikesnow (144.160.98.30) from TEXAS says If you're going to wait for a 2004, Nissan?
I had a 2001 Silverado 1500 ext cab v-6. I bought it before I got a boat. I got an 18' aluminum bass boat and it towed it pretty well. I got a much heavier 20' Nitro and it didn't do so well. I traded it in on a 2003 Silverado reg cab with the 5.3l v-8. I'm VERY happy with the trade. I miss the back seat, but backing is so much easier with the shorter truck (which is why I went to a reg-cab). The 5.3L (according to the computer built-in) gets about 17.1-17.3 mpg in rush hour traffic (though not a lot of stop/go), mostly interstate. Towing was in the 12's if I remember correctly. It has a lot of power, but the shift from 1st to 2nd is kinda a hard shift, but it was like that in the other 5.3l I test drove, so it's part of the truck, not mine in particular.

I chose Chevy because they gave me $1500 in gm card cash in addition to the $2000 rebate and $500 bonus cash.

Based on Dodge cars, I'd not own a Dodge truck, but that's MY opinion.

Check out www.nissan.com and look at their 2004 truck. 9000 lb+ towing capacity and over 300 hp. I isn't out yet though and I haven't seen it at the auto show (didn't go). It looks like it could give the domestics a run for your business.

  10. 1/30/03 9:02:00 AM Submitted by Reel Work from TEXAS says Bassman...
I want to go the dealers that you go to! I haven't had a dealer allow ya to keep a new vehicle for a few days... Well, EVER! LOL

I think the liablility is just too much. But then again, I live in a large city and that probably has a lot to do with it. A person could drive a new car across the border in about 4 hours from here! I can't say I blame the dealers either, could you imagine how frequently this would happen?!?

    Later,

    Chris (ReelWork)

Brad, I've been around there has just been a ton a Chevy posts that I have nothing to input on.. Imagine that, lots of Chevy posts! oops... Sorry, just calling it like I see it! LOL

  11. 1/31/03 7:26:00 AM Submitted by Bassman IA from IOWA says well Chris
dealers around here have done it for years. Now they don't let some kid take one for a few days, my neighbor had a new 150 ex.cab Lariet for 3-4 days -- then of course he bought it.We are along ways from any borders.

  12. 1/31/03 8:47:00 AM Submitted by Reel Work from TEXAS says That's cool...
Yep, it's too bad that the illegal activities tend to override all other action and set the rules for the rest of us. I did however have a used car salesman allow me to take a Toyota 4Runner about 7 years ago and keep it overnight. I must have put 250 miles on that thing looking and feeling for anything. In the end, the gas mileage SUCKED on that V-6 and I had a Jeep at the time which ran circles around the Toy when it came to power and handling but the Toy was nice and had a great ride..

Later and thanks for the reply!

I have a 1999 Silverado and its the biggest piece of junk on the road. I was just going through all my shop papers a couple days ago and the truck has been in the shop eight times for a total of 33 repairs. About 10 of those were somewhat major repairs. My truck now has 53000 miles and the throttle body sticks, it pings, rattles and sqeeks on start up, the rear windows still leak, the steering wheel clunks on turns, and the "service four wheel drive" light keeps coming on. I will never, never buy another chevy. I am looking forward to the day Nissan, Toyota, or even Honda comes out with a true full size truck.

My GMC has a 5.3 and pulls my Triton as far and fast as I want it to. Besides I think Ford has one ugly truck and Lifes to Short to Drive a Ugly Truck

  16. 4/4/03 12:23:00 AM Submitted by Craig Walwork (205.188.209.7) from UTAH says Silverado is better
I currently own a 2000 Chevy 5.3 liter, it has 130,000 miles on it and I put it through hell. It has never me down, it pulls a 18 foot enclosed snowmobile trailer as fast as I want on flat, and wont dip below 75 on hills. The only problem I have ever had was a powerstearing gear, and it was an easy fix. I also have a 2001 F-150 work truck that does nothing but tow our little 10 flatbed trailer around town. It has never even seen offroad and I have nothing but problems with it. It is a 5.4 liter triton and it can't tow a bucket of logs.
