SUBJECT: # 10479: Motor Homes

Submitted by McCoy (64.12.116.212) from TENNESSEE on 7/25/2004 10:14:00 PM

Anyone got one? I'm thinking about getting one and was wondering what kind of gas mileage to expect from a midsize one. 5-6 mpg?

    McCoy:

I would expect a little better mileage than that. Just back from our annual trip from Texas to Canada pulling a 620 Ranger (a pretty heavy boat). We have a 36' Rexhall w/ a Banks equipped 460 Ford and averaged closer to 7 mpg running 63 to 65 mph and using the generator about 50% of the time.

This is the 4th motorhome we have had. I've acquired some knowledge at a considerable expense over the last 25 years of motorhoming that I would be happy to share with you.

If you think a boat can be a love/hate relationship, you ain't seen nothing yet. That being said, we are starting to look for our 5th. And if this last one is any indication, they have become much more trouble free.

I have a 97 Four Winds 24' Class C with a Ford V10. I get between 8-9 miles per gallon whether I am pulling my '96 Pantera II or not. It doesn't seem to make much difference whether I am running the dash AC or the generator either. If I am pulling the boat, running the dash AC and the generator, the worst I have ever gotten is 7.8 miles per gallon running 65-70 MPH on the highway. I have had the motorhome for almost 3 years now and use it a lot. It's a pin in the you know what backing the boat down a boat ramp in the dark, but you'll get used to it.

I had the same exact problem with mine. They would not move at all. The problem is the pins are seized to the actuator and it moves every time you hit the pin. Spray the livinf chit out of it and just keep smacking it with a big ass hammer. I think I used a 5lb hammer to get mine out.
