SUBJECT: # 12229: Chevy 6.0L Gas Mileage ?

Am considering purchasing a 3/4-ton Chevy p/u with the 6.0L. Anybody have knowledge of fuel consumption of this combo when trailering around 3,000 lbs ?

    consider the 496 if you are gonna go with a 3/4 ton PU. The 6.0 IS a great motor but in 3/4-1ton trucks the mileage difference is 1-2 mpg tops, less when the load gets heavy. With over 2 tons you'll actually get better mileage with the big block than the 6. Mileage wise you'll probably get an all around unloaded average of 12-14 in a crew cab 4x4 3/4ton. The same truck with a 496 will get 11-13. Loaded (over 2 tons) you'll probably drop those figures by 1-3mpg.

    If you just want the 6.0 you can now get them in the 1/2 tons and they ARE powerful motors, about 2mpg less than a 5.3 with most other things being equal. Again though, load on the weight and you'll not see as big a drop in mileage with a 6.0 like you would with a 5.3.

    lol btw, EITHER motor won't know 3K#s is anywhere nearby!!! RA

    on what gear ratio the truck has. Go with the 373's, and you'll have some $$$'S to spare at the pump. Go with the 410's, and you'll be visiting the pump quite frequently!!!!

    I have a 2004 2500HD with the 6L. Running around unloaded, 14 mpg day in, day out. No more, no less. I happen to tow about 3K myself and it drops to around 11-12 mpg with that load, but I live in the mtns. I have done a little better on flat interstate @ 65 mph towing, but not much. RA is right on, this motor doesn't even recognize 3K is behind it. Overkill truck for 3K, but I occasionally tow 6K also with no problems.

    I have the 410 gears. It is also Ext. Cab. For that particular model year, I couldn't get the 373's unless I bought a Duramax. Big chunk more $$$$$$$ Hopefully that has changed???

    Unfortunately you can't get the 6.0L with anything but the 4.10 rear end. I've looked extensively at the diesels, but can't justify the extra $6K or so. Probably will go with the 3/4 ton and the accompanying 4.10 as I will be towing a 8,000 lb travel trailer too.

    Currently have a 5.3L, '02 Silverado and don't see any need to buy another one of these since I wouldn't be gaining any towing capacity.

    I'll just hope gas prices stay low, fat chance.

    If you get a 3/4 ton truck you can get a standard 2500(not a 2500HD)and get 3:73 gears. Thats the difference between the 2500 and 2500HD. Moreover, the 1500HD has 3:73 and the 6.0 as well but only comes in a crew cab. Good luck.

    trip to Mexico couple years ago,we were towing comparable boats/motors and he was getting almost 14 mpg towing at 75 mph...I;ve got a 5.3 and was getting 12-13....we figured the reason he got a little better mpg was that he was using overdive and I wasn't........

    some folks were getting as good as 18 mpg on the highway unloaded. It has the 6.0L with AWD. I wonder what gear ratio those have in em??????

    It does come standard with the 10 bolt 373 LS rear. That must account some for the better mileage. That would be the one to get as it has more HP (345)!!!

    Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure the SS trucks had the 345hp 6.0, AWD, and 4.10 gears.

    for some $$$$'S!!! Expect with gears, possibly new posi unit, install anywhere between $500-$1000. Might pay for itself IF you plan on keeping it long term.
