1999 U.S. Open Bass Tournament
by Gerry, BFHP

LAS VEGAS, NV. ‹ A field of nearly 300 anglers will take to the waters of Lake Mead next week for the 1999 U.S. Open Bass Tournament, the largest event of the year and in the west for the WON BASS Miller High Life tournament trail. The westıs best bass anglers will be trying to unseat last yearıs champion Marcus Clouse of Henderson, NV, who walked away with biggest prize in western bass fishing history as he won the tournament and also had two daily stringer prizes of $2,500 each. With $50,000 cash, a Ranger/Mercury boat and a Ford Sport pickup truck, Clouse claimed over $118,000 in prizes. There are 143 Pros and AAAs entered in the 1999 edition, with at least two dozen AAA anglers on the ³waiting list² hopes that more boat-owner Pros would sign up at the last minute, said WON BASS director Mike Kennedy. The 1999 U. S. Open will feature a first prize worth more than $110,000 and a total purse expected to exceed $400,000. The big event again will be staged out of Callville Bay Resort and Marina, with housing headquarters in the luxurious Sunset Station Hotel & Casino in Henderson. First place in the Open and includes $50,000 cash, a Ranger 518VX bass boat and trailer, equipped with a Mercury outboard, GNB Stowaway batteries, Raytheon Marine electronics and a MotorGuide trolling motor. The rig will be towed behind a Ford Lariat pickup truck from El Cajon Ford. Entrants in the big field include anglers from California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, South Dakota, Georgia, Texas, Utah and the nation of Japan. While the big fish prizes are a main attraction at the Open, you donıt have to catch a real whopper to win one. Traditionally the big fish here are in the 5- or 6-pound range, and with five $2,000 prizes each day for the biggest bass, 3- and 4-pound class are usually enough to get someone a piece of that action. Where in the nation can you enter a tournament and win $2,000 or a new bass boat for one cast? The Open features the Miller High Life Options, which are the best "Big Bass" and "Big Stringer" awards offered in tournament fishing, with more than $59,000 in prizes up for grabs in the $200 option jackpot. Five anglers each day will earn $2,000 each for the 5 largest bass weighed in - a total of $10,000 on each of the three days of the tournament. There is also the special "Big Stringer" award which offers $2,500 each for the Pro and AAA weighing in the heaviest string of 5 bass ‹ another $15,000 in cash for big stringer awards. The overall largest bass of the tournament will earn one angler a $15,000 package including Ranger R-61 boat and trailer and Mercury outboard. The contest will be staged on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Lake Mead. The launch and weigh-ins will be held at Callville Bay Resort and Marina. The starts begin at approximately 5:30 a.m. each morning and the weigh-ins begin at 2 p.m. daily.
