Greers Ferry From: Eze (69.149.211.62), Arkansas
Why cant fishermen in the state agree that we need more aggressive management for bass species in Arkansas? Seems like no one wants to be a voice for catch and release and length and creel limits. I too remember the "glory days" and now its gotten to the breaking point..too many fishermen keeping more and more fish..depleting the resource for those that do..catch and release.

I agree.. just to clear it up a bit.. I dont have a problem with a fisherman that is fish hungry and wants to keep a couple of say 13 inch spots.. gas is $3 a gallon, a couple of fish will feed most 2 pple. I do have a problem with the "fish fry" fisherman. Sure its your right, you pay for a license. But the way I look at it, if I would have kept limits back when the "glory days" were on, I know we could have put a hurt on the lake. I live to close to it...lol... I guess what really made me think is I took my son who is just now wanting to start fishing with me, he is a Conway fireman and 23 years old. It sucks telling him about the glory days then going and catching 10 fish in a whole day. He hasnt made it to the point of "fishing" instead of "catching" yet...but if he could get a few days of "catching" in then I think he would be hooked and I'd have a fishing partner for the rest of my life. My dad who is my partner now is getting old, so I guess thats what has me thinking. He is from the old school... "catch and fry" It tooks a couple years to break him, now i've seen him turn 7lb fish back.. but he understands now. well, I have vented enough, and I gotta head to work...
Pressure From: Flipper. (192.252.76.200), Arkansas
I have fished Greers on a semi regular basis for about 3-4 years now and maybe I am just getting better or learning more about it, but I think the fishing has improved if anything. I fished a couple of weekends ago there and had 20 keepers in one day and several the day before, last year I had a few 40+ fish days..but the years before that I was doing good to get a 5 fish limit. I think the pressure has made it different, but not because they aren't there or they get eaten. I just think you can't go around throwing 1/2 oz jigs, spinnerbaits, big cranks, etc and still catch them because that is just too easy and everyone does it. Try downsizing, fish out a little deeper instead of right on the banks. Fish slower (very difficult to make myself do) but it works usually. All the fish I have seen from Greers in the past couple of years have been more healthy and bigger than in proceeding years so I don't think there is any decline in fish or in the population on the lake, you just have to figure out a different way to catch them. If everyone on the lake is throwing a spinnerbait then go behind them and fish a grub for example. I fished behind a buddy of mine (we were in different boats) on 3 pockets a few weeks ago, and he had absolutely loaded the boat on a floating worm and I wasn't catching anything..so I put the same worm on a jighead and started catching them, but still not as good as he was...so then put the same worm in different color on c-rig and bingo!! my .02
