Spot Tails From: Buford22 (69.15.100.13), Georgia
I rig them two different ways. Either a drop shot rig or a split shot. I keep the weight about 12-14 inches from the hook.
Drop shot... From: EZ Spin, Georgia
I agree with the above post but I think the drop shot rig works best. Hook them thru the lips with a small Gamakatsu drop shot hook with a 18 inch drop and a 1/4 drop shot weight. I prefer to net up spot tails on beach areas or ramps with grits because it will cause less problems with the cast net. Where are ya Fish Boy-Spot tail king? Tell these guys how to do it! Keep taking those kids fishing! Good luck and God bless!

I would suggest using a split shot or using a light carolina rig set-up. The drop shot rig may be a little harder or the kids to pick up on. Use a light wire hook. I can't remember the name of the hook I used to huse but it is a long shank hook and is shiny gold. The long shank allows you to unhook a gut hooked fish easier which will happen with spot tails. The light wire will allow the spot tails to move around more naturally. You want to drop the bait to the bottom then pick it up about two feet with either of these two rigs. Try to keep the line tight and just up off the bottm. Put the weight 16-20 inches above the hook. I started fishing spot tails around 1988 and have found the light wire hook with a split shot is the best way to fish these little guys. I do not use a cast net. I catch all my bait on a hook. It takes more itme but I can't imagine doing it any other way. It's a lot of fun but it takes a lot of practice. I can usually catch 3-4 dozen in 30 mins or so so it's not too bad on time. The cast net does take a lot less time if you can throw one. If you are having a hard time catching fish in open water go and fish docks. In the early 90's I would go and catch 20-30 fish off docks in the summer and this is when I was still young and learning. There are plenty of fish still under docks this time of year and with spot tails they will all bite.
How do you catch spottails on a hook? From: . . (24.98.5.97), Georgia
Just curious how you do this technique?
Catching them on a hook From: DOBCAngler (152.163.100.136), Georgia
You use a tiny hook. It's been years since I have fished spot tails or as I call them shore shiners. Can't rememebr the exact size off the top of my head. I use a little 5 ft light action rod with 4lb test. Pull up to any beach and instead of using throwing a cast net get the fish to bunch up with some bread and cast to them. They are very faxt and this technique is not easy, take some practice. If you catch bluegill doing this you can use them for bait as well. You CANNOT use bluegill caught in a cast net. Just to give you an idea of how tough this is to do I have never taken anyone fishing using shore shiners who has caught more than 6-7 at the most. I usually catch 10-12 to their 1. Catching them on a hook can be frustrating.
spot - tails From: maddog (208.5.44.21), Virginia
We hope you guys are using this for the kids only, this is a sure fire method to delete your fishery,if you call yourself bass fisherman you should'nt resort to this method,if you feel you have to do this go catch a bunch of crappie. If everyone on Lanier resorted to this tactic in two years you'd be lucky to catch a pecker head,so please think before you endorse this. It's like shooting ducks in a barrel. Hope i did'nt offend anyone just want to save some for my Grandkids to have a challenge with, the same way that i was brought up,take only what you need. When you bring them up out of deep water using this method most all will be floaters before the day is over.I remember the best guide on lanier was criticized for this method last year.
spot tails From: curious (98.192.73.11), Georgia
Just curious -not trying to pick a fight - so if most spots pulled from this deep end of as floaters, what is the difference between using spot tail minnows on a drop shot rig and a tournament full of guys using a plastic worm on a drop shot rig.
Hey Butch, From: Hawgsticker, Georgia
I'm not getting in the squabble with the remarks. im just going to tell ya what has worked for us. Use a drop shot rig with a #2 (not 2/0) drop shot hook. I like a quality hook like Gamagatsu or Owner. 18 to 24 inch drop line with a 1/4 oz weight. If u want to use a split shot for the weight because of price just tie a simple over hand knot at the bottom of your drop line and this will keep the split shot from slipping off. I know alot of guys use a small Carolina rig with a bait hook, but this really does increase the chance of a fish getting gut hooked. Most of your fish caught on the drop shot will be stuck right in the lip. When you are hooking a spottail onto the hook try to get the hook in the little hard patch in the roof of its mouth. They are kind of tender little baits and not real durable. That brings up another reason we like the drop shot rig on 8# spinning rig , if you ever need to cast your bait away from the boat, it is easy to "pitch" the bait 20 -25 foot away and not damage the spottail to bad. A c-rig doesnt fly thru the air as well and crashes your bait alot. And everyone will tell ya a live spottail is 20 times more effective than a dead one. Keep the baits COOL and well aerated . Catchin the things is the difficult part. We use a 3/16 inch mesh net. chum them in with a few small balls of old loafbread from the house or some dry grits, catch a few dozen and go fish . If we run out you can always catch more on just about any shore, ramp,or island that has some sandy patch or area.I think maybe this is enuf to get you going in the right direction. You should have a blast! Take a kid if you can :) Hope thats what you were lookin for, Good Luck -- Curt...........
Thanks From: Butch (63.71.83.197), Virginia
Thanks for the replys. I will be using this when I take my kids fishing, not going to go out and try to catch a bunch myself just trying to show my kids a good time.
Spottails From: Fishboy (76.97.157.121), Georgia
Im with hawgsticker on the dropshot method. The small fish will eat it so fast on the carolin rig method that you just cant set the hook fast enough to stop them from swallowing it. Also the good thing about the drop shot method is you dont have to jerk there faces off, just wait for the rod to bend down and lift on the rod easy and you will have them. Somthing to remember, even if you are fishing with spottails you still have to find the fish, you cant just fish anywhere and exspect to catch fish, Email me and I will tell you some good places to start at and you should be able to get the kids some good action. mweaver30041@yahoo.com

I think the gold shiny hooks you are referring to might be Aberdeen hooks. Not sure, but they are what I use when fishing the brush piles and trees with live baits. They bend out rather easily when snagged, but I don't seem to lose any more fish than with any other type hooks.
You are right From: DOBCAngler (64.12.117.77), Georgia
Yup that's what they are called. The last year I fished spot tails I was missing a lot of fish with them. I would stick the fish and the hook would actually bend and not penetrate. I would fight the fish for 10-15 secs and then they come off.
