Well From: Gtn (148.134.37.2), Virginia
Most of the time people don't report the bad days. Sad but true.
reports From: Keith (65.175.249.7), Maine
Hey everyone...I haven't been posting for a while because I've been fishing tournaments=little time for fun fishing. Slappy...if you're catching("more often than not") one pounders then you probably should be trying something different(or put down the senko). Not to be rude, but most of the waters here in Maine hold numerous quality fish, and provide the opportunity to catch a 4 plus every trip...that is if you're not fishing the gardiner section of the kennebec. I'll admit I have some tough days, but it's not very often I don't put together a 15lb+ bag for 5 fish every time I go out. Right now the fish seem to have pulled of the grass and are holding on wood and rocks(especially on points). Try dark colored jigs/tubes, and crawfish crankbaits. Don't be afraid to experiment, and remmeber to let the fish tell you what they want. Slappy, don't take this to offense...just trying to help you out.
catching only small fish From: Dave Wasdahl (64.12.117.199), Maine
I have to agree with Keith except for the slam on senko's! I know they have been around awhile and cost too much and fall apart too easy and Gary Y. doesnt offer too many deals to tournament fisherman, but to imply you can only catch small fish with them??? Many of the four plus fish I routinely catch are caught on senko's. I will say that a good size jig and chunk (1/2 oz jig, 3.5 inch chunk) can catch larger fish on average. I tend to see the small fish come on crankbaits, as they can get hooked on a treble easily but not as easy for a small fish to eat a whole senko and a 4/0 ewg hook. Most of the time they bite short in my experience. Keith, someone else buttering your bread with free lures? :)
Little ones From: Joe Michalec (68.37.239.80), Pennsylvania
Hi, I ususally fish the Penobscot area and catch plenty of smallies, a lot of them are small but there is always enough 2-4lb fish to keep me satisfied. This year we had to search for them, often times we would catch them along with the smaller fish, along the shore around the rocks, but for some reason this year most of the better fish were picked out deeper water, could be that the water was 72 eegrees when we were fishing. BTW does anyone think that fishing would OK the end of this month (Oct) in the Windham area?
senko's and windham area From: Keith (65.175.249.7), Maine
I know senko's can catch big fish, and believe me people have kicked my *&% with them in the back of the boat throwing to that outside weed line behind the boat. I just see a trend with people not putting it down and having fun catching a lot of fish...which is fine, but in a tournament its not always about numbers, and adapting to what the big fish want, that particular day, grants me more success. I'll admit I always have one tied on, but more often than not it's not my go-to bait. This is the best time of year for big fish besides pre-spawn, I think, and bodies of water near windham like Thomas Pond, parker pond, and Little Sebago are a must in October. The launch for thomas pond is right on rt. 302 in Raymond(I think thats the town). It is a gravel lauch, and you have to go under a shallow bridge that looks decieving, but has enough water to float my 18 ft ranger. What you see from the road is not the main pond...navigate through the narrow area, and watch out for boulders. I graduated from SJC, which is right down the street, and I fished here in the fall all the time. It is a great fishery that provides great smallmouth and largemouth fishing. Try black jigs and white spinnerbaits(gold blades) on rocky banks and humps which are marked with white jugs(only 2 marked, but more thoughout the pond that are productive)Don't be afraid of the cold weather...I've had some of best days at the end of Novemeber and even into early december at the Saco River.
St. Albans Big Indian Lake October 5-8 From: slappy (24.34.44.83), Maine
Howdy,

Thanks for the replies. I should have chosen some better words. I meant to say that I never see anyone report that they were catching smaller fish.

Anyway, I do fish a lot of plastics. I probably have more plastics than any sensible person should have :).

This past weekend on Big Indian in St. Albans the fishing was excellent. I caught one hog, 4.10 on a 4" watermelon Zoom finese worm. I also caught about a dozen 2-2.6 pounders, large and smallies on various pumpkinseed colored worms. The Berkley's seemed to work the best. I was working docks and gullies/drop offs. Rocks always produce. 10 feet of water and less given the fact that the water is cooling down and these fish are pigging out before winter sets in.

The top water action was just as good. It didnt matter what I threw, they were all taking. I love fall fishing. Spinner baits only produced 2 fish, a pickerel that was 16 inches.

I fish all times of day but for some strange reason I have best results after 1 PM on.

Slappy

Windham area From: Keith (65.175.249.7), Maine
One more thing...Joe if you like throwing senko's that maroon/rootbeer color with red/black/gold flake(5 inch) works well for catching numbers on Thomas. Good luck!
Thanks guys From: Joe Michalec (68.37.239.80), Pennsylvania
Fellas, I thank you for the advice, since my daughter moved to Windham, I expect that i'll be fishing there more often than the Penobscot. Keith, I found that launch on Thomas pond when I was there in May, looks tough. One other thing, I see so many reports from everywhere talking about senkos. I must be retarded, I have never had any success with it (rattle traps either). Rapalas, power grubs, plastic worms and lately Zoom 4" lizards make up my arsenal. Over the years they have kept me in good stead. BTW is the Cobbe and Messalonskee open to fishing in Oct? Again thanks. JM
kennebec county From: Keith (65.175.249.7), Maine
Yes, both those bodies of water are open until November 30th, and it's catch and release only...even though most of us here do that anyways. If I was you and going to that area I'd fish Great Pond, but they're all great fisheries. I was on great pond sunday and the smallies were everywhere chasing alwives(sp.?), and top waters were on.
