We fished Friday and Sunday. Where the wind was not blowing us around, we pulled up a lot of dead grass. Some places we found both. Silver rattle trap worked best in the river by the short cut to the 9 bridge. Do not know the local name for the short cut which is only available at high water. Saw lots of carp and shad.

The Birmingham Bassmasters fished a two day tournament there this weekend, and I was going to post a report when our results were uploaded on the club's website in the next few days. Simply put, it was tough. Saturday, we had several zeros, and lots of one or two fish. I was one of the unfortunates who zeroed. Between myself and my non-boater partner, we put about 18 fish in the boat with only one measuring. I caught 8 on a spinnerbait, one on a crankbait, and one on a worm, no 12" fish. Leader after day one was over 11#, but it dropped off fast after that.

Sunday, it got a little better for the club, as we had less zeros, but still few limits. Larger fish did show up, as several upper 3 and 4 pound class fish were brought in. I managed to catch 3 keepers, including one 4# largemouth, a 2# spot and a dink, all in the morning on a crankbait. I also had another that brushed the 12" mark once out of about 10 measures, I kept the fish but threw it back without weighing it, not worth it. Winner had over 26# for both days, but second was under 15, we got blown away! Big fish was 6.17 on Sunday.

Check the club website for full details and pictures, but it may be a few days until they are uploaded: http://bhambassmasters.homestead.com/

Would you guys say the bass were pre or post spawn? I was heading up there this weekend and was just wondering where to start looking. thanks.

We saw both. My 4# largemouth on Sunday was definately Pre (she still had a defined gut), but we saw several that were either post or in the middle of the spawn. I didn't notice any extra-skinny fish, but some large mouths were normal-sized. That said, we fished a good bit of skinny water and I didn't see the first bed, I'm thinking that the cold front pulled them off.
