Long Summer From: Old CSM (207.43.112.66), Georgia
Phil, Boy you hit it right on the head. I was on Lanier a couple of weeknds ago fishing in 42 degree water and was buzzed by jet skier's. I started having terrible flashbacks to last summer. I started seeing hundreds of jet ski's, yachts, barges, ski boats, houseboats, partyboats, pleasure boats....coming from every direction, the wakes knocking me around on the front deck. The sad reality is, this ain't no nightmare....it's the real thing on Lanier and it's headin' our way again soon.
Bait From: Nothin but Fish, Virginia
Yep I saw a water skier as well. Also, on the way back down the lake at "last light" I saw a ski boat with no stern light in front of Lanmar and on the bank across from him was a fisherman with no lights at all.

The bait is in the very back of Flat where the creek comes in. All you have to do is go back where the water is 10-20' deep and throw.

Hope this helps! If you need any additional info you can reach me at bcarson@carsondirect.com.

Tight lines...Bill Carson <")))><

Delightful Co-Existence From: Cap Tim (216.135.131.179), Georgia
Flat Creek is full of bait most of the time, stripers sometimes, and strange human behaviour all of the time.

Ski boats chugging 30 ft. away with 6 ft. wakes using my floats as slalom bouys. Guys in pontoons with 8 lines out staring ahead trolling over my baits. It seems to be futureworld with crazed bug-eyed hypnobots persuing their individual passions on the water without much regard for the immediate situations.

I admit to getting caught up and wrestling pigs in the mud.

After being swamped by the ski guy for hours upon leaving FC I trimmed her out high and gave him the same wake. You should have heard the indignant curses regarding my inconsiderate operation! I think one of them spilled some of their beer!

This game will only get worse as time goes on and population swells. The consolation to the FC mess is that when the ski guy wipes out I know the fecal coloform count he ingested. Is that what FC stands for, really?

jet skiers From: Fontaine (206.228.170.34), Georgia
I had to throw this one in regarding the skiers and the jet skiers. Last week I arrived at the ramp to find two jet skiers launching, neither of which were wearing suites. I asked him if he knew how cold the water was, to which his reply was, of course, "no". I informed him that it was in the low fifties and was very conducive to hypothermia in a matter of minutes if he fell in. His reply was that he didn't plan on falling in. I asked "who does"....LOL
Darwin Award Contestants From: Cap Tim (216.135.131.179), Georgia
Hey Fontaine- Look towards the greater good of mankind. This is natural selection at work before your very eyes.
Not to change the subject but am desperate for info. From: Dirk (166.102.174.7), Georgia
Does anyone actually know what triggers the stripers to start their run up river. I have heard that when the water flowing in is warmer than the lake water they begin, but that is not even close to our current conditions since I showed river channel near Lumpkin Co. Park to be 44 deg. whereas many areas of main lake at 55 deg. Is it a temp. trigger or do they have a built in "calender" and run at a certain time each year or what. Thanks. Dirk
Striper River run ... From: Fishing Fool, Georgia
In years past, the stripes make their annual northern spawn run usually beginning in Mid to late February. Many people think that the stripes here cant spawn. I have found this to not be the case due to the number of pup sized caught, and in talking with the old timers who live way up past civilization on the river who encounter the same year after year. However, due to the abnormally EARLY cold weather we had, the water got too cold too fast, even for the walleye. As of last week, there had been a small number of fish that were beginning upstream, but the 3 cold nights we had, brought em back down. A bulk of fish can be located now (Stripes and Whites) from Thompson creek bridge, north to just south of Clarks Bridge. Whites and stripes will be ganged up in the pockets/fingers, and the walleyes are hanging on the river channel drops.

Stripers From: Fontaine, Georgia
LOL...Cap Tim., how right you are. What a hoot!

Hey Dirk, check out this page http://www.ocean-beach.com/striper.htm. There are two sections that will give you some pretty good info on their spawning habits. Temps are in celcius so you will to convert. It is the results of an actual study and should help you form your own opinion. Hope it helps. I will mail you anything else I find as I am going to continue my research...TXF

Spawning Stripers? From: Gary (207.69.5.220), Georgia
Gentlemen, I've always heard that landlocked stripers just go thru the motions regarding "spawning" runs up river. If not the case, I'd like to receive some further education. I went to http://www.ocean-beach.com/striper.htm as Terry suggested and it gave some great info regarding saltwater stripers spawning in brackish water, but nothing on the landlocked striper..... Give me some scientifically based info on the subject so we can put this issue to bed. Then again, if anybody would know about the sexual activities of a fish, it'd be the fool. LOL Tight Lines
Striper Spawn From: Cap Tim (216.135.131.179), Georgia
This is from Mack Farr's Seminar recently attended. Stripers in Lake Lanier lay eggs in the river bed and the males deposit milt exacly like all stripers, and some are born. The problem lies in the rapid flow and silty nature of the river bed, causing 95% of the eggs to be covered and unable to be fertilized. This 5% is obviosly insufficient to re-populate, ergo stocking is necessary to sustain and bolster the numbers we enjoy.

That's what Mack sez.

That about sums it up ... From: Fishing Fool, Georgia
Hey! Sex on the fish? lol ...

Thats about right ... As per the bulk of printed information, a successfull fertilization requires about a 50 mile stretch of river with a good flow to prevent the eggs from getting stuck on the bottom and then getting silted in. However, we do in fact have an ammicable amount of riverway for these fish to spawn in, and in most cases, have a reasonable amount of flow for the eggs to work their way down. While I agree that the percentage of eggs which live are slim, I would say that 5% seems a bit low and would venture to say its probably more around 10-15%. This of course being based on actual fingerlings which I have caught while trout fishing, and white fishing way up the river ways. I have had friends catch stripers as far north as Helen during the spawn run. A few other pages of interest:

Dnr From: Dirk (166.102.177.137), Georgia
I called the Georgia DNR and they connected me to a gentleman at the fishery/hatchery division in Gainesville named Lee Keefer. He seemed to really know fish habits gave me alot of the same info FF just said above, including stripers running all the way up to Helen. He also said that he thinks the trigger is when the river levels rise and current in river and therefore lake increases combined with warmer waters due to warm rains. This puts them in the spawn mode and SOME will run up river. He said that any time now stripers should start up both the Chestatee and the Hooch and will continue for up to 2 months. He said they are doing studies to get info on amounts of natural reproduction takes place but as of now are unsure. Saturday seems to be shaping up for a good fishing day but I will be unable to go up very far since I am testing out repairs I just finished on my dads big cuddy cabin (purchased specifically for shark fishing at St. George and Hilton Head area, he is a shark fanatic). We will definitely wet a line though and I am tentatively planning to go up to the Toto Creek area and anchoring (no place to put a trolling motor on this beast) and fish some live and cut bait. Thanks for all the responses and I hope everyone has learned a little, as I have. Stop and chat for a minute if you see a white 22ft Sea Ray CC with red stripe. By the way, my dad has done a lot of research on chumming and has recently bought a 5 gal. bucket of Minhagen Oil(also called Poge fish oil, not sure of spelling of Minhagen). This apparently is an extemely fragrant fish oil that makes sharks and other fish go crazy. Is it effective/legal to use chumming technics for striper in Lanier? I forgot to ask the DNR guy, but I think its legal and couldn't make me catch less than I already am lately! Hope everyone has good luck on the lake this weekend except the rude jet skiers who I hope freeze their reproductive organs off. Dirk
