cj strike From: Badhabit (216.187.158.20), Washington
Years ago I used to fish some tourney's on cj. If the smallies are spawing. I found good numbers of smallies in the burneau arm, come out of the narrows go right, there is a slough back there. go to the entrance of the slough, work toward the cement boat launch (i think it's call the cottonwood launch) in about 35 yards from shore. don't go into the slough. this is a long flat area with the right size gravel. go all the way to the boat launch. make sure you lure hits about 3 feet from the bank. I caught the biggest smallie near the slough on a pig and jig, most came on a black panther martin with gold blade. the fish would follow the bait and then hit it, you'd feel the pressure of the bait working and then just slack, set the hook, you got to be fast on the hookset or they'll just open their mouth and you pull on nothing. fish were all keepers, never kept them, can't eat the money fish. we did keep the crappie and blue gill from the other north side of the bruneau arm.

did you try the area. I'm curious to find out if the fish are still using that bank to spawn on. This Mid-July, right at daylight, the flats around Black Sands launch, try a Zara Spook, glitter flitter no rattle, or the spook puppy same color. Another bait the smallies don't see down there is a small buzzbait. All I can say is "savage" hits, bonus could be you get a 5lb largemouth. Put a post up for me if your have any luck.

If you see a fisherman from Jerome named Arvin Reese tell him his old partner says hello. Tell him I'll take him to some real smallie fishing in the Hanford reach or Crow Butte.

To Badhabit; How you doing. Thanks for the info & the reply. Am planning on going to CJ in the morning. Was planning on fishing the main river. Sometimes i put the boat in at Loveridge bridge. I have not fished that area since the spawn. There are some great spots in that section. I did fish the Brueno Arm since my last post, and did catch some nice fish to about three pnds. I know the area you are talking about on the south side- did not fish it at that time. I did just tonight see your post. I will fish it in the next week or so, & let you know how we did. The wind has been so bad this year. Its hard to get a day with just a mild breeze. Where do you live? I just got back about two weeks ago from a fishing trip to Oroville Cal. Great fishing down there, lots of spotted bass. They fight harder than the Smallmouth. Well good luck fishing. Dave

Dave, i now live in yakima. back in 1988 i lived in jerome, and was a member of the mountain home bass club. fished tournments with arvin reese out of jerome. we used to fish cj alot since it was the closest big water for a bass boat. it's been years since i fished cj. last tour i fished was the idaho state qualifier (88), i stayed in one cove for 2 days and my non boater beat the socks off me. he thanked me for putting him on bass and qualifying. i used to like fishing lake lowell out of nampa, used a spinning johnson's silver minnow with a white trailer. got more than 1 fish that went over 6lbs. had to really reef'em in in the lilly pads or whatever those vine type plants are. kind of miss it. now i fish the col. river and banks lake and potholes. col river is the most fun though. lots of big fish, fairly predictable now. not many people fish for the huge largemouth though. not many, but real sows.

is the spawn over on cj?? have you ever fished not anderson ranch but the one further north, can't think of it's name. i caught some big smallies on the far north end in the shallows, big i say 3+. real big is 4+(never there)

last weekend, i went to a place on the columbia, near a town called mattawa. in 3 hours we caught 50+ smallies, texas red rebel wee craws, jb special (color) see uncle walts in spokane. too many doubles to count. 58 degree water and they were not on beds yet. this weekend ought to be a gas for the sight fishermen. we don't fish any tourns on this impoundment so i take a few bucks to eat. got to watch out for the "hook worms" damn worms curl up in the meat, you have to hold the fillet up to the light and then you can see them, walleye have them too.

Hey Badhabit, how you doing? I did fish CJ on Monday. Did not do real well, even with the full moon and all. Surprized me, I thought we would nock em dead. Did notice there were alot of bugs on the water- long bodies & wide heads. I don't know what they are but suspect the fish were eating them. Did catch a couple large mouth. The spawn is still going on & probably will for another couple weeks. I have not fished Anderson yet this year- but plan on it in the next week or so. The other place thats north of there must be arrow rock res. Anderson dumps into Lucky Peak. If its one of those- let me know. What is a Spinning Johnson Silver Minnow? Is this a jigging spoon? I have been fishing a small res. around here also. Its been a kick- 7 1/2' flipping stick & jig & pig. I havn't been flipping that long- but its one of the neatest ways to catch bass. The bite is so definete. Caught one 41/2' pre-spawn l.m. last friday that was as deep as she was long. Neat looking fish. I don't fish tournys- just pleasure. Plan on fishing Lake lowell when it opens. Hey thanks for the responce, always enjoy hearing from guys that have fished the same waters. Dave
Lake lowell From: Badhabit (216.187.158.230), Washington
A Johnson's silver minnow. Get your bass pro or cabela master catalog out. It's a silver or gold weighted spoon, with a weedless wire. A spinning silver minnow has an in line spinning blade atop of some beads at the head of the lure. Gives it more flash and action, the white trailer gives'em something to focus on. It's great in the heavy structure, better than a spinner bait and more accurate to cast. last time I fished Lowell, I broke down and did some flippn, actually caught a darned catfish flippn. Lowell is shaped like an hour glass, I was fishing the south side of the narrows area when I got the biggest fish.

As for the lake I got the big smallies on, it's up by featherville, it's the big res.the feeds the south fork of the Boise river. Hell, its got to be Anderson ranch. The smallies up there hit spider jigs with highly modified pork trailers.

C.J. Res. From: James Duncam (209.240.222.131), Idaho
hey there badhabit,

i have fished that same spot outside of the Narrows in that slough. i really have not had that much luck there. my father fishes tourneyments for Snake River Bassmasters and he has knowned about that spot to and not to much ever happens on the spot. they have a little boat ramp kinda inside that slough now and ever time i fish it...seems to be tons of people catfishing there now. on thing that i am having trouble with is finding where the hell the largemouth are in C.J. every weigh in...there is always someone that brings in a 5,6,7 lbs largemouth. i don't get it!! i have looked all over that damn lake and have found not one spot that has largemouth in it. any help would be of help. also...do you know of any underwater humps are in the lake. one day i jus drove around in my ranger with the bottomline goin to work and i can't find nothing. take care and i will check back with ya!!!

I've only seen big lm bass come out of the Snake arm. As you're headed upstream from Black Diamond launch it's on the left side or north side of the arm, it's a slough that goes north...don't know the name of it but the big fish I've seen came on rattle traps. I've also hammered some big smallies at daylight on spooks just off the ramp on the flats.....shsshshshshs don't tell......
1988 ? underwater humps From: Gary (67.160.38.162), Washington
Hey Badhabit,

Did you know a guy named Ed Bartlett when you were in the Mtn Home Bass Club? He brought me into the club in 90. I only fished the club for a year before the AF moved me. I might be heading back that way soon. I have done fairly well on the Western side of the state here in Washington and blown off of Potholes a couple of times.

For Dave Beutler & James Duncam,

It has been a long time since I've fished CJ but we used to hit the old roadbed near the AF boat launch and the old homestead off the opposite shore from the AF ramp about half way to the Dam and probably 70 to 100 yards off the bank. Pulled a few nice Lm of the wood in the Burneau arm as well. You can also have a lot of fun in the large rocks near the mouth of the Snake River arm with a mid to deep running Bomber ‘A’ crank bait. My best luck on SM was up river toward Crane Falls.

Any luck on Anderson Ranch? I never had much success on it but the res. was extremely low the years I was there.

Gary
